Is it really that cold in Januarys? To my amazement Burlington Normal low is 13 but the Normal high is 29; so to see real feel temps of -15+ seemed abnormal.... but you guys would know better then me..

Here's BTV discussion.

TIGHT GRADIENT IN MDLS DOES SUGGEST POTENTIAL WIND CHILL ISSUES. DAYTIME HIGHS IN TEENS AT BEST BFR DROPPING SHARPLY OVERNGT TUESDAY AS RIDGE CRESTS OVER THE REGION. EXPECTING NEGATIVE TEMPS FOR LOWS IN ALL SPOTS OF CWA RANGING FROM -2F DOWN TO -19F(FOR DACKS/NE VT)
So if winds are at 15mph and the temp is -5, it will feel like 26 below zero.

It really does get that cold. Every 2nd or 3rd year we experience a -40 night. That's Celsius or Fahrenheit. This would be for the northeastern part of the state anyway. Wish I could remember the year but one day in January our high was -17f with bright sunshine. I'm guessing it was about 15 years ago.

It appears that the front moving through tomorrow night will trigger some snow shower activity, but accumulations look very light once again. The pattern looks a touch colder, but hardly anything unusual. November and December have been one of the warmest two month periods in northern New England since records have been kept with northern Maine recording a record warm November. January looks a bit closer to average for temperature based on what I am seeing in the models, but no big storms at this early stage in the month.

I think the numbers must be averages over years or decades. We are more than the rest of the state, but only by about 5-10 degrees. I think the more realistic Burlington averages are between -5-20 degrees. In the years I have been living here, I don't remember many days at or near 30. The exception of today (we are over 40).

There are bare spots everywhere right now and usually we end up paying dearly for this kind of meteorological misbehavior. Kinda proud that I spelled that big word correctly on the first try! I was commenting to an old timer yesterday that we seem to have a lot of New Year Days that are comparatively warm lately. He agreed - and then promptly went into true geezer mode telling me about the good ol days when it was 30 below for a couple of weeks at a time.

In his defense, and as someone who has worked in public service here for a few decades, I can attest to times when main water lines froze here in North Troy. It was truly something to see the frost line down below 6 feet.

So, historically speaking, we could go there again. But right now we are a long way off from that kind of scenario.

Default January Snow Depth

Current snow depth vs monthly normals.
I couldnt find Jan 4th normals so I used the entire month.

It only takes one storm to put down a healthy snow depth but its still amazing to see the current colorless maps.
