Here in Williston I haven't really had any problems with mosquitoes or flies this year. There isn't much standing water near our house though.

We just picked blueberries all day in Goshen and in Rochester. No mosquitoes and just a couple of horseflies who weren't too bothersome. Amazing.

Wow, that is amazing! Though I find that the horseflies are usually horrendous there. Maybe they just like me a lot or something, but every time I go to Goshen to pick berries I get swarmed. The last time I went the bites grew into huge bumps all over the back of my neck.

Actually in general this summer I've noticed that the mosquitoes aren't as bad as usual, but the flies are much, much worse. Is anyone else noticing something similar?

Agreed about the mosquitoes. They've been very minimal in my outings.

I got one horsefly bite yesterday -- right inside my ear. Ewwww! It was better after about an hour. I finally trained myself to carry wipes saturated with witch hazel, which pretty much cures whatever ails me, from sticky, dirty hands to itchy fly bites.

Exactly what I noticed.

I'm hoping our deerflies are gone by the first week of August. From what I've observed we get them for two months-usually beginning in first week of June
until first week of August.

Last year they didn't arrive until mid june, so I was hoping we'd have a short season with them leaving at the usual time, but they hung around until mid-august.

momnh and I live in the same town, I get them and she doesn't. It's all about your property. Again, house-hunting in june and july is a good idea.

Far and away the worst fly season I've had.

Some of the environmental groups were worried about the mosquito population this summer due to the big decline in the bat population. I think our saving grace has been little rain/standing water. The one good thing about the heat is it evaporates standing water. There is a correlation with the bat issue and the larger number of other insects around this summer.

It all depends where you are for which bugs you get. Everyone is right though, the deer flies this year are out in droves.

We have it bad with no-see-ums here in Burke. Our property is right on the east branch of the Passumpsic River, so maybe it has to do with the moving water. You never see them coming, and when it turns to dusk, they are everywhere in an instant. Then it's a rush to close all the windows before they fly right through the screens. On the mornings when I forget to close the windows shut at night, I am awakened by invisible bugs eating my legs and arms. Sleeping in 90 degree weather with the house sealed up is an abomination. I hate those little bastards.

It's not you, it is buggy.
In fact, I just got bit by a mosquito as I read your post. Sucker got me good too. I think I need a blood transfusion.

The big ones (cluster flies) are easy to smack though bc they are not that fast. You can get traps for them online.

But at least there's no scorpions. Those things would keep me awake at night.
