I made some and my wife and I really liked them but the texture was less than appealing. When you bite into it it was like bitting into refried beans, mushy and all. I even doubled the cook time. I may be one of the few that say this outloud but I love the store bought morning star burgers. They all taste great and have a real burger texture.
Try Linda McCartney's veggie cookbook, Linda McCartney's Home Vegetarian Cooking. Most of her recipes seem to start with "take 3 of your favorite veggie burgers..."
M Star black bean burgers are my favorite too. No way can I eat mushy bean burgers! I cook mine longer than recommended to be even a little crunchy.
I do not like any of their other "burgers"...

I have simply mashed up my drained, homemade black beans, added flour, wheat germ & egg (not necessary) until mixture is a firm consistency that forms easily into flat patties. The drier mix, the better. Then I fry them in olive oil until crisp on both sides.
I wasn't aware Morningstar was a dirty word. *shrug* I like their products, myself.
I don' thave any personal recipes but I've noticed a few restaurants that I've gotten black bean burgers, they've also been occasionally mushy. Went to SmashBurger and got one and it was good but mushy, just like yours.
Love love LOVE morning star's black bean burger and my daughter does too. I want to start making my own veggie burger as well, but for now, morning star will do.
I read recipes for black bean burgers, lentil burgers, whatever, and really have little to zero interest in cooking beans, chopping veggies, putting them in a food processor, messing up the kitchen. Mess. Forget it. And my burgers fall apart, are mushy, much easier for me to buy them.
