Yes.
It is an important seaport since the East India Company days. It was important in Anglo-Burmese wars, Second World War against Japan. Ship Breaking industry started here by accident and now it has one of the world's biggest Ship Breaking Yard.

Abandoned broken ships were used as a backdrop in Avengers : Age of Ultron movie.
