Yep, stick-shift (we call it manual) is the norm in the UK and the rest of Europe. Not to say that automatic is rare, it's just not the norm. If you wanted to hire a car you would need to request that it was automatic (and possibly pay a bit more) because it would otherwise almost certainly be stick-shift.

I was in the states a few weeks ago and was grateful for the auto - I think I might have cried if I'd have to shift gears as well as drive on the wrong (to me) side of the road + learn lots on new rules.

Yep!

Mrs Jezer has a manual car though.

If you want to find a car you can do far worse than check this site out. You can go into advanced search and select auto transmission only. There's some good old(er) cars with auto that you can pick up for not much money.

Auto Trader UK - Buy & Sell New & Used Cars, Car Loans, Car Insurance

It will ask for a postcode (zip) so it can tell you how far away that car is from you.

If you don't know what to put in try this one- SW1 1AA.

It's the one for Buckingham Palace near central London!

I prefer auto because I'm in the city. I drove a manual for two week over the summer and my knees hurt like hell.
