Do you think a show like Northern Exposure would be a success in today's USA. Northern Exposure was a show about people from different walks of life who did not always agree but found a way to live together and get along. It was a show that was fun and quirky while also providing a very moving episode from time to time. Would a gentle show like Northern Exposure do well in the entertainment world of hyper partisan news, crime shows, super heroes, and dragons. This is not a "either/or" type question because in the digital age there is room for all sorts of TV shows. I just wonder if a show like Northern Exposure whould have a chance or have we moved on from a show like that in today's world.
I'd watch it too. I have some of the episodes and eventually will have the series, but love the way people who aren't the same manage to comfortably get along. I agree, it wouldn't be on a commercial station. It might even fit on pbs.
The message was people may look different or act different, but if you want you can find a way to relate as fellow humans.
I loved the ending too, and still firmly believe he didn't end up in New York.
When I was moving to this small town in Oklahoma from stuffed full socal, I occasionally thought of that show... but I'm still here and some interests I miss aside, couldn't stand to be back in the rat race.
I rewatched the original from start to finish about a year ago and still enjoyed it. So I'd definitely watch a new show with the same premise as long as it was well done with interesting characters and great dialogue.
As you said, it was quirky, which made it stand out to me. I don't think it would stand out for that reason today, but I think the characters and the mood of the show would still captivate viewers if they gave it a chance. One of my favorite shows ever.
I loved this show. I don't think it would survive in today's world. It was a smartly written, well acted show and any show that smacks of intelligence doesn't last long now.
The show was a brilliant chaotic morass of existentialism, spirituality, multi-culturalism and quirkiness all filmed in the majestic setting of mother nature. It was more like a piece of performance art than it was a show. In a way, it was the "Woodstock" of TV shows, everything just seemed to come together at the right time and place, all but impossible to duplicate (as some have tried with Woodstock).
Also, might it have necessitated a "Baby Boomer" mentality (or subsequent generation within the ball park) to appreciate? A curious experiment indeed to introduce a show like Northern Exposure today, and see how it would play out with today's audience.
all shows that are very different from the normal blah you see.
