I wonder why he's grown that beard; does he want to look like a hillbilly Santa? Perhaps he's trying to disguise himself in daily life? It's especially odd because he's the father of a teenaged boy and looks like he's someone's goofy grandpaw on a sitcom, like he should be on Dukes of Hazzard or Jed Clampett's uncle or something.

Been watching Letterman since around 1981 or 1982. It honestly became kind of painful watching his show in its last decade. He didn't have the comedy writers he had at NBC, and it was harder for him to be unique with so many other talk shows out there. But he was a trailblazer, indeed, and his show revolutionized the talk show format.

Dave had a reverence for Johnny Carson, and deservedly so. There will never be anyone that can replace someone like Carson. His show had a real air of formality to it that was always upended by something wacky and unpredictable happening. Part of that were his guests. Hollywood was different back then, the circle of great actors was genuine. Today's actors seem like imposters.

Letterman is a huge arse in real life and it seeped out into his show you could catch glimpses of it all the time. The famous Paris Hilton interview is one example...he was a total jerk to her for no reason. Just because's she's wealthy doesn't give him the right to be a jerk. She never did anything to him.

This is an article that discusses his huge personality issues :

Letterman was not for everybody.

But that's what made him the $400 million dollar man.

But as far as poor little Paris Hilton...she was so despondent over the interview that she came back on the show at least twice more.

So true.

Actors were so iconic back then....

John Wayne
Marlon Brando
Jimmy Stewart
Bob Hope
Cary Grant
Paul Newman
James Coburn
James Garner

Carson would have on zaney sort of actors too...

Charles Nelson Reilly ....always a hoot!

Today's actors in comparison are mostly bland, faceless,
I mean Bradley Cooper...James Franco......snoozeville....zzzzz

This is true of all those guys. Carson was no joy off camera, neither is Leno. Hilton got was coming to her. She was 'famous' for a sketchy blacklight sex scene and was treated as such. Superfluous.

I was shocked watching the PBS doc on Carson. I had no idea he was such an ass to his kids. And cheated on his wives. Back then the paparazzi stayed out of their personal lives and we had no idea what they were really like. I think I liked it better that way.

I agree what we have now is pretty underwhelming there's hardly ever a movie that comes out that I'm interesting in seeing. I like Leonardo DiCaprio his movies are usually good, and Tom Hanks, a few others but there's not many.
