Where would the best place be to live in Tucson? I was thinking of living around the VA hospital but I don't know the area. I can buy a house for $150K or rent one for $1200 or just get an apartment until I learn the area.

Other than your budget limits, LostSoul . . . what do you like, want and/or need in a home?

My main goal is to be able to breath because I'll be coming from Phoenix (The land of poluted air) and not be by a lot of schools because I'm 65 and alone.

Have you ever thought of living in a mobile-home park? Desert Pueblo on Ajo way might fit your needs. Its near the VA and there are no children. You could buy an existing manufactured home for less than a house. The park itself is ultra-safe even though in a higher crime areahttp://http://www.desertpueblo.com/?...tion=home.main . I have stayed at this park for a couple of months and liked the area and people both in an out of the park.

I'm in about the same boat, LostSoul . . .

When I relocated to Tucson about 15 years ago, I purchased a small Patio Home (about 14 sq ft) near the Tucson Mall. Safe, quiet and convenient to just about everything including shopping, restaurants and bars plus the Rillito Park Bike / Walking Trail.

Good Luck on your search.

I've lived in Tucson since 1978. I'm a single woman over 50 and I just don't think the area near the VA hospital is safe. It's really never been. The east side, the north east side, the north and north west side of Tucson are good.

I'm in the Green Valley area south of Tucson as of last week. just getting some sun and a chance to do some SW photo stuff, all in all the Tucson downtown has a definite lacking of good housing that could be considered reasonably priced. The burbs to the east were nice as well as the west side, west of the freeway. I drove all over Tucson yesterday and looked at lot of homes for sale, as I said, the east side, out Broadway, was by far the best location I found, close to a ton of shopping, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, etc. Down the old Nogales hwy (6th street out of town) to the east and south looked like it was never much of a decent housing area, run down areas are a testimony to the much neglected far south side of town.

Hey Lostsoul62: you sound just like me, except the starting point. Please let me know how you make out with your search, as well as what priorities you may/may not have in dwelling amenities. I'm going to be in Tucson next week to check out some apartments and rental homes in the $900-$1,100 monthly range, and I will get in touch and share my findings if you'd like. Good hunting!

The area near the VA hospital is called South Tucson. It is the single most dangerouw place to live in the city. You MUST speak Spanish to 'fit' in. I go to the VA also but live in Sierra Vista. My SIL lives near the UA Hospital and you should be able to find a nice place in the Campbell-Drachman area, then easy bus trips arlund town.

Hi,

I lived in Phoenix from 1990 until June 2011. I retired from the Phoenix VA in 2009 and began my search for a place to live here in Tucson. I left because the pollution got so bad my lungs got irritated outside and when I ran errands I in the area around I-10 because of all the planes flying overhead. The west side of Tucson is so congested,. I feel the best areas are NW Tucson (around or a little north of River Rd and Oracle) or east/ NE.

For now, I am in a very nice independent living facility, single level, block, well-maintained - still looking for a permanent place to rent or a patio home / townhouse to buy.

There are many empty mobile homes for rent. If you rent, Swan Lakes (west side) is pretty nice for temporary until you figure where you want to be permanently. The lake is 4 acres and you can fish there. The mobile home park I really like (a friend had lived there for 10 yrs) is Rincon on Camino Seco. Homes kept up, most have red brick skirting, pool, recreation activities, gated w/ a guard at the gate, and if I find a MH that meets my requirements, me too. Around Dec 2011, it became a non-smoking community.

My 2nd choice mobile home park is Friendly Village of the Catalinas-- at the corner of River Rd & N Oracle.
