Marissa Alexander Sentenced: Florida Mom Who Shot At Abusive Husband Gets 20 Years In Prison and here is another link: http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/07/14/why-did-marissa-alexander-get-a-20-year-sentence-despite-invoking-stand-your-ground/

This case should have never gone to trial. What good is the SYG if you cannot use it to defend yourself?

I agree with the verdict. If you have a gun, shoot it at the person you are afraid of. Not at the ceiling, that is drama. Not, '' I shot a gun, in fear of my life.''.

She would have been better off if she had killed the guy.

Nope. She left and came back with the gun. Fatal defect in SYG.

The more I read; the more I agree with you. I presume that none of the abuse was documented at the time it supposedly took place?

I also agree that you don't use firearms to intimidate. You also should not use weapons if you have no training - it could have resulted in the death of one of her sons.

Twenty years for shooting at the ceiling? No one was killed. That's harsh!

Why is this so hard to understand?

It is Florida Law. Simple as that.

So if something is broken it would appear to be Florida law.

The prosecutor for this case, Angela Corey, also was the special prosecutor that charged Zimmerman.

The article made it clear on why she was convicted, it only took 12 minutes for the verdict.

Is 20 years too much? In my opinion yes, but this is what we get with minimum mandatory sentencing. It is even more of an absurd sentence when you see a drunk driver that kills someone get only three years in jail. Miami College Student Gets 3 Years In Prison For Fatal DUI

Exactly. Some people think it's timely to dig up that case and crab about it, but it helps to get the facts straight.
