I had a few American buddies who have circumvented the US laws to go to Cuba. How cute. Break the law? Just for kicks? Nice. Why not just go rob your local bank? Start off shop lifting at the grocery store as a warm up. It's harmless isn't it? Take your nieces and nephews along too. Show them how cool you are. Teach them that laws don't matter.

Great idea. Show them how senseless laws that serve no purpose other than pandering to special interests are wrong.

Really, it's a technicality and I doubt rarely enforced, and their are a multitude of exceptions if one really had a reason to visit and wanted to make it officially legal. But there are no direct flights to Cuba so they don't make it easy to get there from here.

My view is - why would one need to go to Cuba? You have a hundred other carribean islands to go to in various stages of poverty or prosperity, each that is more beautiful and certainly better equiped to deal with toursists. I understand why some go to Cuba (mostly the eurotrash crowd) - underage prostitutes. And it's clearly marketed for that purpose.

As for travel and business restrictions with the Castro regime, let me just add, we have nothing to gain by easing restrictions, Castro has everything to gain. Who's hand needs to be played here?

There's a lot to gain. It's called friendship.

We are friends with CUBANS, many of them are living a comfortable life in south florida after Castro stole everything they had in the world. Castro is not our friend, never will be, and it's niave to think his regime ever will be even with the embargo fully lifted. But maybe in the future, with Castro dead and gone (both him and his brother), Cuba will moderate and the embargo can be lifted. It's a heck of a carrot, a bargaining chip...and we hold all the chips.

Cuba and N. Korea, the only 2 almost pure communist countries that still exist in the world. Relics of the last century. Someday they will change.

A friend of mine just got back. There are loads of Americans there, they fly in from either Cancun or Toronto. Or, you can buy a vacation package in Toronto, which has many flights to Cuba. If you want to see the island as an independent traveler, its almost imperative to rent a car, because there is a severe shortage of public transport, and travel is extremely difficult without your own vehicle. Accommodations are very inexpensive, with rooms easily arranged in private homes. The food is very good and cheap.

Never tell anyone in the USA that you went there, every once in a while the Treasury Department decides to make an example of some poor traveler, and throw him in an American prison for a while or assess a huge fine.
