The area around the campus provides no areas for social interaction, hang-out spots, shops etc... Actually, the campus is surrounded by the following on all 4 sides: Decent Middle Class Neighborhood, Campus Apartments and housing, A BP gas Station, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Marcos Pizza, Papa Johns, Adandoned Warehouses, new student housing.

Ummm, aside from the Student Union, where are people supposed to hangout, what are people supposed to do for fun (besides get drunk as hell, which is all there is to do lol). It seems as if there were some kind of Shopping down Secor ave. but it looks more like a failed mall. Is the movie theater on Secor still open?

Many a nights, we would venture to Columbus, Detroit, Windsor or Cleveland to satisy our night life needs. Hell, even Bowling Greens nighlife takes a dump on Toledo. At least they have an entertainment "strip" with hangout spots in walking distance from campus.
You are right on about UT. There is no university district to speak of. Although they are trying to create a district at the corner of Secor and Dorr St. I think that is years away. They have revamped Westgate as another shopping strip with Costco, Rite Aid, Starbucks, etc. The usual stuff. And no, the theatres on Secor on long gone. They moved to the mall. Toledo is now facing a $48 million deficit and a $30 million deficit for the public schools. I doubt there will be any urban development taking place anytime soon. This place is in dire, dire shape.

Toledo's best days are behind it that just they way it is. But nobody in this area want to own up to that. There are too many issues and no way to fix them simple as that. Sorry

That's too absolute of a statement for me. I think there are some issues that are simple to fix, and even the complicated ones CAN be fixed eventually. Sure it may take 30 years for Toledo to turn around, but even that far off possibility makes saying "Toledo's best days are behind it" too absolute for me.

I HATE Toledo. I am a Toledo native, I go to UT, and I can't wait to graduate to get the hell out of here. Toledo is the new Detroit.

I've spent considerable amounts of time in both Toledo and Detroit... The difference being that Detroit still has islands of niceness left.

Toledo has some great areas of niceness too. You just have to know your way around here. Our biggest problem is we have lost our economy. Only one Fortune 500 company still exists. Because of that, our property taxes are sky high, local government and the school districts cannot live on a budget and homeowners are taxed to the max to pay for everything. Since there is not a lot of flowing money from the residents, small businesses do not do well and very few new things come to town. It can recover if we find some way to attract jobs.
