Hi guys,

My family and I are relocating to south Texas. My job will be in Brownsville. We're thinking about Laguna Vista, Port Isabel, or Harlingen. We have a three year old that will start school in a few years and a new born.

Of the three places mentioned where would you recommend to live?

By the way, we're a white family that doesn't speak spanish.

Thank you so much for any assistance!

You might be more comfortable in Harlingen. Oh--BTW--the "proper" terminology in these parts is "Anglo", not "white".

Default Welcome to South Texas

Hello,
I think you would find Harlignen or Port Isabel more apppealing to live at. You can find some really nice homes for lease in both of those cities for like $1500 for a 3 br. Both cities are very nice and of course Port Isabel is right on the water with 3 minutes to the beach.
Port Isabel also has a great school district .

I am born and raised here in the area so feel free to ask me any questions about this area. You will love the weather.

Laguna Vista has some nice homes in the area of their new Golf course.. It is just up the road from Port Isabel with easy access to Hwy 48 (to Brownsville) as well as South Padre. It is a very quiet town and more upscale than Port Isabel.

I lived in Harlingen for 3 yrs and worked at the then new hospital in B'ville (on Alton Gloor) for 6 mos before husband took a job back in Houston. My research found that the education system was better in Harlingen (except for private). I also looked for mos before finding an area that I liked. Harlingen seemed to have subdivisions like the ones I was used to here in Houston. B'ville didn't seem to have as much in the way of zoning. I was worried about property values. Try the Treasure Hills area in Harlingen, near the hospital, that area worked for us. I liked Rancho Viejo, but the taxes were really high and if I remember correctly, different areas of the subdivision went to different elementary schools, one really good, the other no so much. Also, we aren't avid golfers; however, It was a real bonus being so close to S. Padre. If it's still there, try the White Sands Restuarant "all you can eat - flounder" in Port Isabel. It's super!! Hope this helps, enjoy the great weather & the nice breezes!
