I just happened to be looking through here earlier and ran across a quote from Irwin and was just wondering if he had ever been to Vidor or was just going by things he has heard in the media which as most people from Texas know is very prejudiced in the way they report stories.
I have worked in the school system in Vidor and will tell you that it is not anything like what the media makes it out to be and to call a whole town and it's people vile because of some things that happened in the past is wrong.

If the people of Vidor,Texas want to live their lives as hate mongers, then so be it.I don,t have the time or the inclination to hunger for their acceptance.I,m too busy living my life to care about a town that spews hatred.I say let them wallow in their own misery.

Have you ever been to Vidor yourself? I'm guessing the answer is no based on this post. The PEOPLE of Vidor, most of them, are nothing at all like whatever dumb stereotype you may so ignorantly believe.

You're more likely to experience racism in some rich, mostly-white suburb of Houston than you are Vidor.

Most people would be quite surprised if they actually visited Vidor and see what it's like for themselves. It's nothing at all like what CNN or any other media outlet would have you believe.

Well, I grew up in Beaumont, Texas (outside of Vidor, about 40 miles or so) and I've been to Vidor many a times. It's a little hick town, but I have never had problems there (as of 13 years ago, the last time I was there).

But I tell you who are the real "hate mongers" and that's people who don't like us Texans or anybody from Texas.

I live in Arizona and a lot of people here don't even like me one bit. These west coast people are the REAL "hate mongers". Just saying what I've experienced. Thanks....

I've lived in Vidor my whole life with the exception of 1 year in Colorado and 1 1/2 years in Beaumont...which is the neighboring "big" town. There was more racism in Beaumont than I had ever witnessed in Vidor. Yes, it's a tiny, southern hick town and yes, it is a mainly white town but it is NOTHING like the media has portrayed it to be. It was horrible a long time ago but the people that live there today do not condone or agree with it. We don't teach our children to be racist and we often find ourselves going out of our way to make sure we aren't portrayed as racist. There are blacks that live here now...not many, but they are here and they are accepted. You can always tell who has been here and who hasn't. Unfortunately there will be always be racism and whites aren't the only ones with the problem. We just get blamed for it a lot...especially if we are from a white town.
