That's how it is in Austin. If you see Lady Bird Lake you would think its just a wide river. As you move south you will see the dam and the original size of the river will appear. Go to bing maps you will see what I'm talking about.

Here's a link to bing maps. Just zoom in and go south of downtown. Press the road tab and pick bird's eye.

Has it been dredged?
Buffalo Bayou was dredged on the lower end at the ship channel, but it is so big because it has a large water shed area. It gets water from about 20 Bayous and streams in and around Houston.

The river stuff is just silly. All of the rivers that flow through North & Central Texas and empty into the Gulf of Mexico are piddly in size in North Texas. The Trinity, Sabine, Brazos, Neches, and Colorado rivers (and all of the ones that I forgot to mention and can't remember right now) are all pretty large in South Texas.

Of course, part of that comes from what should be common knowledge in that ANY river that empties into a major body of water or another large river is going to be bigger once it gets closer to it's confluence with that body of water.

The Brazos River West and Northwest of Houston is pretty freakin' big. The Trinity, Sabine and Neches Rivers in SE Texas are even bigger. In fact I crossed over the Trinity near Livingston on US Highway 59 last week and it seemed big enough to navigate with small & medium sized boats at that point. Same thing with the Neches.

The Trinity River in Dallas and Fort Worth is a joke; nothing more than a medium sized creek, so it is definitely nothing to brag or get excited about. Of course, with all of the open low-lying land along the Trinity in the metroplex, it could be damned and made bigger (similar to what Waco has done with the Brazos), but when will that ever happen? Who knows.

Out of all of the rivers in North Central Texas, I think that it is safe to say that the only one of any decent size is the Red River along the state line with Oklahoma.

Wow, Dallas. Wow.

Why You Hatin? « disported

Quote:
Houston seems to hate everything that Dallas represents. Sports excellence (5 Super Bowls, 1 NBA Title, 1 Stanley Cup, an NHL team for that matter, a baseball team that is relevant, and teams that make the playoffs regularly), zoning laws, clean air, and the lack of Katrina refugees. With all that said, I can now see why Houstonians hate Dallas so much. Dallas basically represents excellence in all that it does while Houston strives for mediocrity. A town that is now rivaling Cleveland for sports futility must have something better to do once their teams habitually nose dive every year. It is because of that Houston homers spew nothing but hate. I don’t blame them though. If the last time I witnessed any type of sports success was during the day that chili bowl haircuts and pogs were commonplace, I would probably have lots of pent up hate as well.
I seem to remember most Houstonians rooting for Dallas during the Finals since most hated the Heat. I thought the Heat would win, but it was nice to see the Dallas vets win. I mean, Houston may be jealous of Dallas' sports success (number of titles), but city wise, everyone knows Dallas wishes it was Houston. They steal our slang, steal our clothes, listen to our music, copy our style, etc., and try to play it off as their own. LMAO.
