I would have guessed that Rice was the hardest to get into and would be the highest ranked.

It is amazing that SMU is ranked lower than University of Texas (Austin), and the tuition price tag is much higher. SMU, TCU, and Baylor are all lower ranked than University of Texas (Austin) for a higher price tag. SMU is only ranked 7 spots above Texas A&M, and TCU and Baylor are ranked below A&M. A&M is much less expensive the private schools.

Private schools should be higher ranked and a much better experience to justify the price point.

Texas Tech's low ranking isn't impressive.

For recognized academic excellence, the world university rankings are more telling rather than the US News list, which has some criteria that can be suspect.

To compare one would have to look at contribution of students in different walks of life.

That’s one way to measure but not the only or most accurate one. It mostly reflects upon share numbers of alumni out there.

You’ll never see as many entries for small elite undergrad schools like Pomona or Amherst who graduate few hundred students per year compared to University of Ohio or University of Florida who graduates several thousands undergrad students every year and in addition, thousands of masters and professional grads as well.

Often people only know where someone got their terminal degree, without knowing about undergrad school which actually formed them into who they are.

I completely agree with this.

I'm amazed every year when Newsweek has UT ranked higher in its worldwide rankings than national rankings.

The US News rankings tend to have criteria that favor private universities (like smaller class sizes), whereas international rankings tend to favor large, public universities (number of citations in academic journals and Nobel Laureates).
