In this and most other national level ranking lists UT and A&M rank much higher than UH so they aren’t equals or even similar tier. UH is similar tier as UTD and Texas Tech.

Top 20
Rice #16

Top 50
UT # 49

Top 100
SMU# 59
A&M#66
Baylor#77
TCU# 80

Below 100
UTD#129
UH#171
Texas Tech #187

Like I said better press agents!

UH was once a crappy college but in recent years it has become a respected university.

I question whether these rankings everyone loves so much really assess effectively what I think is the most important item:

How well is the median graduate of the institution prepared for work as a practicioner of the field they majored in?

How many papers are written, how much money is spent and received for research, enrollment, how many programs there are, is all largely irrelevant to the experience of the vast majority of students, who mostly complete a BS or BA degree and then go out in the world to practice their profession (adjusted, of course, for people like MDs who inherently have further educational requirements).

U of H has been a Tier 1 Carnegie Research Institute for years Baylor not. Can't remember which, therefore I can not support, but other Big 12 Schools are not Tier One.

Our son went to Rice. Our daughter went to UT. Very different experiences for obvious reasons.

Son works in investment banking in NYC. Daughter is in grad school at Princeton.

There are pros and cons of each. The overall “college experience” at Rice seemed better. Personal relationships with professors and more leadership opportunities (lack of Greek actually helped). But smaller size got old after the third year, for my son anyway.

UT had excellent programs one had to seek out. Normandy Scholars, Plan II Honors, Archer Program are examples. Larger size means more choices in majors and student programming. Price is obviously a pro. Con would be lack of hand holding, which isn’t really a con when I think about it.

As we preached to our kids, college is what you make of it!

Wow. That’s really classy and a convincing argument to boot.

I guess your kid didn't get in. Otherwise you would know your comment is completely delusional.
