US News and Reports studies the number of applicants, admissions, and the GPA and SAT required to get in to those schools. They then classify them in categories. Texas State made the list as "Selective" Texas A&M is "more selective" UT is also classified as "More Selective" By the way, UT made the list as the 44th best University in America, A&M came in at 62, and Texas State didn't crack the top 500.

But, lcjerk is apparently the expert in this.
The Reason you didn't see Texas State Ranked next to UT or A&M is because both of those schools are considered "National Universities" This means they have a very wide array of graduate programs, Texas State is ranked with the "Regional Universities" This category includes schools such as Trinity University in San Antonio, University of Dallas, OKCU, etc. it is actually ranked in the top 50 universities in the west. And in fact it has a higher retention rate than Tech.

not sure where you are getting this information from, but from 2000-2009 it is incorrect

TxState does compare favorably to many of the emerging research universities in Texas and had better overall metrics than UNT, but it does not have better retention rates in year one or year two and it does not have near the graduation rate of Tech

It's pretty easy to retain students in Lubbock when there is no place within 5 hrs to go. Also they could have better grad and retention rate because umm Idk there is nothing else to do there besides study and it could be a lot easier.

Oh, there's plenty to do there alright. In fact, I found so many fun things to do during my time at Tech that I'm surprised I made it through.
