So currently I am going to school here in Illinois and I plan on getting a degree in Marine Biology. Living in the Midwest though, it's pretty obvious that there won't be very many good schools for this field, since the closet thing to "marine" would be the Great Lakes. And that would mean I would have to move near Chicago, which I would never do. So after looking around, I heard that the marine branch of A&M University is really good and reputable. And this branch of the school is in Galveston, so it looks like I'm moving there within the next two years, hopefully. So basically I just want some insight on what people think of that city. I know that since it's right off the coast I would have to deal with hurricanes and the such. What about the crime rate? Any good jobs that I can get there that can go for my degree?

Also, I'm in the National Guard, and I'll have to transfer units to the Texas National Guard. If there's anyone on this board that knows any benefits that can go to school (for example, Illinois pays for National Guard members to go to school) please let me know.

Texas A&M at Galveston is actually on Pelican Island which is a man made island in Galveston bay immediately north of Galveston Island. It is as safe as it gets especially if you live on campus.

The Texas A&M University at Galveston residential community consists of more than 1200 residents from throughout Texas, the United States, and even overseas. The residence halls are a dynamic and diverse community that provide a healthy living and learning community and encourage both scholastic and personal development.
The Office of Residence Life manages the day-to-day operations of the residence halls and serves to facilitate services for campus residents, such as maintenance work orders, extermination, and check-in/check-out services.

The Texas A&M Maritime Academy provides an opportunity for you to learn how to operate and maintain an ocean-going vessel. In addition to classroom and field training during the regular school year, you will sail aboard the Training Ship GENERAL RUDDER during three summer cruises to gain practical experience in seamanship, navigation, and engineering operations. At the conclusion of the program, you will be examined to become licensed in the Merchant Marine as a deck or engineering officer and may seek employment in the exciting field of marine transportation.

The city itself is ok if you stay in the "tourist areas" such as the Strand or Seawall Blvd or the beaches you will be fine, but there are some seedy areas in the interior of the island mostly along Broadway..

I hope this helps

There are some rough areas in Galveston, but you will learn them in time. We live in the north end of Galveston county and were just on the island this past weekend. I have heard that your program at a&m is a good one. The campus is small compared to the main campus in college station, but it has a good academic reputation, which is what you want.

Well first off, it's going to be sunny and in the mid 60s this weekend in Galveston. I'm not sure if this would be a conflict with your degree/career but the fishing down there can be amazing and the weather is certainly warmer than IL. I'd have to agree with the previous comment, if you're living on campus it's safe.

And you'll find out what true humidity is, even though I don't consider that bad. I have considered going to work at UTMB several times lately. Just waiting to see what effects the ACA has on things.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi also has a reputable marine biology program. Corpus Christi is a bigger city that is, statistically speaking, less prone to hurricanes than Galveston. The crime rates are comparable for the two cities.

The two cities are about three hours apart from one another.

Galveston is part of a much larger MSA Houston with 6.1 million in the area. CC MSA is about 500,000. Hurricane statistics are skewed as well, since so many South Texas Hurricanes in the past have hit unpopulated areas over the past 100 years or so.

Corpus is a great little city and I'm sure Texas A&M CC is a fine school as well, but lets not play with the numbers...

Thanks for the information and the site. Although the Maritime Academy that you talked about isn't exactly what I wanted, I will look further into it since what my overall dream will include having to be out in the sea. My main problem with on campus housing though is that I have a dog that I'm going to take with me when I move, so wherever I move to has to allow pets.
