Have been doing some homework on the Galveston area, and wonder why more retirees are not moving there? Seems to me, what with UT medical school, close proximity to Houston and the calm of Galveston, retirees would be flocking there; but it doesn't seem to be so. Got to wondering why? Anyone have any idea?
Crime, yes, is pretty high in Galveston. Could that be the reason? If so, then why are they flocking to Houston? Closer to cultural activities than the hour drive from Galveston is the only thing I could think of.
Anybody have some insight on this?

I recently moved from Galveston to East Texas after living there several years...my guess on why Galveston may not be attracting retirees would probably have something to do with property taxes and insurance being extremely inflated there.

Galveston is a great place but we decided to relocate because of this...

People ARE moving to Galveston, but there are also people moving OUT of Galveston.

The rich people move into Galveston, while many middle class families move out.

Default The rich move in and the middle class move out!

Well, I said that there were the haves and have nots in Galveston and somebody put a post up acting as if I were hallucinating. It is pretty obvious when you visit.
I checked the tax records and they look like $19.50 per $1K. Bellaire, where I lived before and is too darn pricey for me to buy into again (having gone well over a half million for a house in Texas) is $20.09. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Have they raised the insurance on cars and houses in Galveston? Why? Has there been some major damage recently there?
Galveston always looked to great to me when I visited. So laid back, granted a little dirty looking but it was almost part of the charm.
Do you think the property there will go higher now? If the middle class is moving out, the rich are moving in--and yes! I have seen some of those houses (fantastic!)--then the property values should go up there.
Do you know if the city has any plans to get rid of some of those shotgun shacks in Galveston yet or not?
By the way, cannot pull up the entire article from the Galveston paper, but I get the idea. I guess the property value is going up...damn...by the time I get there, I won't be able to afford it...haha!

Registration is for free - I do not subscribe to that paper, yet I still see the article.
