DFW is larger by population but Houston feels larger and more urban. Like most are saying, the freeways/interchanges and mid/high rises give Houston the overall big city presence. Houston feels larger going north to south IMO. To me the metro begins in Willis and of course ends in Galveston which is approx. 100 miles of development.

It begins in Huntsville actually.

Add 20 miles to that 100.

Houston is so freakin' huge it can be intimidating & overwhelming sometimes.

I can picture a 6th loop eventually going around Houston from Huntsville to Freeport if I knew how to draw on a damn map & post it here. Anyone care to offer assistance?

They both feel gigantic, but I think Houston (Ever so slightly) feels larger/more urban.

I think Huntsville has another decade are two before it will actually be inclusive with the metro. I know on paper its included but there's a bit of open land between Willis and Huntsville.

That will thankfully never be developed thanks to the national forest.

Houston feels bigger because it feels like alot of emptiness in between Dallas and Fort Worth to me. Even though its burbs in between them just doesn't feel as big to me.

Thats true.

I was driving back from Dallas a few weeks back and seen quite a few changes in Willis and Conroe. Lots of growth happening around that area, also looks decent with updated portions of I45 (so glad that's done). Both metros are huge and growing but I notice that entering Dallas via 45 does not give me a big city feel at all. No areas in the DFW area give me that feel except when I'm in DT Dallas, which is coming together quite nicely.

Especially on I-30. It feels like you're out in the boonies until you get to 360 then it drops off again after Arlington to you hit 820 in Fort Worth.

Really the only D/FW freeways that can compare to Houston's with off the freeway development are 75, Loop 12 West, I-35 East, 183, & 635 between I-35 East & I-20.

Honestly, neither feel very urban unless you're in very select spots. They both sprawl on endlessly for miles and miles and if you didn't look at a city limit sign, you couldn't tell ithe difference in which city you were in. Home Depot parking lots look the same in Houston, Dallas, OKC, Lubbock, etc and majority of both metropolis are never ending strip malls.
