Driver's education in Texas needs some modification:

Driver Education: 'Bicyclists are a Source of Danger' | Commute by Bike

I mean come on, is there really a question of who is more dangerous? The cyclist is not the biggest source of danger on the road. It's the car/truck/suv that kills people. Not a cyclist.

I'd say it's the 80 year old Moderator cut: Off-Topic women. I'm sorry if my experiences match a stereotype, but it's true!

No, that would be the cellphone. Seen cyclists texting before. Damn scary. Just as bad as the vehicle driver.
At leadt make texting with pedaling or driving illegal. Georgia did it.

Dangerous to whom? Not to anyone but himself/herself. However a texting driver of a vehicle is a danger to EVERYONE. Of course, I also agree that texting while on your bike isn't smart, but it's only dangerous to the cyclist.

I'd say a cyclist going into the road is dangerous for everyone. Could have someone swerve to avoid him, or have the guy go through the windshield, or take down a motor cycle man.

Moderator cut: Off-Topic

Are you for real? A cyclist texting ends up not seeing the red light coming and keeps on riding. Poor unassuming driver who hits them and gets killed and the cyclist killed too.

Are you for real?? Since when has a cyclist ever caused the death of a motorist? If a car hits a cyclists, the cyclist dies or suffers massive injuries. The motorist has a scratched and dented car.

Vehicles are more dangerous simply because of their mass, but if the cyclists would all obey the basic traffic laws, that would make it safer. I had an older couple blast through a stop sign this week over by Memorial & Westcott right in front of me. I saw them hesitate, and then they just decided they were more important than me apparently. They are lucky I was not going any faster, and that I saw them.

And I was behind a guy crossing Memorial Drive on Waugh this week. He was going like 15-20, and cars were backing up behind me, zipping around us. Since I was turning onto Memorial, I had to stay behind him. But I've also been behind a truck before that was approaching a bike, then the truck zipped into the next lane and THERE was a cyclist that I did not see before. Hit the brakes to avoid the bike!

Bike trails or total residential streets are the only places I would ride my bike in Houston. Just too dangerous for me.

This isn't about whether or not cycling is "safe" in Houston. This is about the very wrong wording in the Texas Driver's Education that states that "cyclists are a huge danger on the streets". This is in fact completely wrong. Cyclists and their bikes are not weapons. Vehicles are weapons. They kill people everyday. The wording should be changed to impress upon motorists what an enormous responsibility they take on every time they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. If you are not willing to see your car/truck/suv as a weapon, then you don't belong behind the wheel of that vehicle.
