My wife and I will retire in about four years. We currently live in NYC but own property in Florida (whiere we had planned retire). But with Florida's insane flood insurance and rising crime rate we are reconsidering and are thinking about Texas. My question is: we like warm weather, a quiet, safe, almost rural environment. We have no children and like I said will be retired. Can anyone recommend an area of Texas they feel would be good for us. We want to stay away from very large cities such as Dallas and Houston, but suberbs are ok. Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

They don't claim that Texas is "like a whole other country" for no reason. Texas covers a huge range in climate/terrain/demographics. Your question is much too broad and non-specific to be answered sensibly.

Very popular is the "hill country" area (google that for various towns). Places you might like: Fredricksburg, New Braufels, Gruene, Salado .... these towns all have a pretty village area, are near enough to larger metro areas, and offer rural-ish housing options.... plus low crime

I agree.

Personally, I always like the Stephenville/Comanche/Brownwood/Coleman area. Rural but close enough to DFW and Abilene to keep it only a day trip. The area combines good grazing and farming property and great hunting opportunities. Great people as well!

Yep the hill country. We stayed in Fredericksburg last weekend. We arrived early to our B&B and called to see if we could drop off our bags early. Being from Houston we didn't want to leave bags in our truck while we walked around the town. They said we must be from the city because "that stuff" doesn't happen out here.

Fredericksburg is awesome if you love a slower pace of life, by the way. New Braunfels is larger, but still very, very nice!

Granbury is quite nice. Just to the southwest of Fort Worth. Far enough away to be a separate town and not a suburb but close enough for shopping and entertainment. It has a nice town square and lakefront. I think it is a popular retirement mecca.
