TexasVines...I found data that indicates that the majority of poor are Hispanics living in border counties. What I did not find though were further breakdowns to see how many of those poor qualified for government assistance.

The median age in these 2 counties is 27 years old. That's pretty young compared to other locations where the median age is in the mid to upper 30's.

I just can't see how this is the fault of rich businessmen.

I've seen the poverty. It's horrible. They are literally living in make-shift shacks. And I'm not talking about run down older homes. They are shacks.

Texas is quickly approaching majority-minority state.
Over 50% of the poor are Hispanic.
The majority of poor are located along the border.
Cameron and Hidalgo counties are the poorest counties in the entire US (41% pop there is poor)

This is not something new. Texas has had a larger percentage of poor compared to other states since 1980.

Texas Politics - Poverty in Texas - BETA
What is your point? That it is OK since most of the poor are minorities?

Some posts above were deleted for discussing illegal immigration. That is one of three hot-button topics that C-D administration has decreed cannot be discussed in a state forum, along with national politics and religion. The posts that remain above are on-topic for the forum.

It's normal, Texas has so many illegal immigrants, and most of them don't have a high school diploma !
But Texas is one the best state for income growth (+81% for 1999 to 2009).
Houqton is now one of the best city in the US for average incomes, superior to Los Angeles or Atlanta for example !

No..my point was that I don't think it's the fault of rich businessmen as another poster pointed out. It could be due to lack of education.
I was also pointing out that this is not new to Texas and our ranking as one with many poor go back to 1980.

Too many people take a little bit of data and make broad generalizations.
You can't reduce poverty until you know the root cause.

It's called Illegal Immigration.

Too many people tend to dance around the real issue and put the blame elsewhere. Lack of Education isn't the real reason; it's the lack of citizenship.
