No, San Angelo is not as bad. Abilene historically is a farm and ranch town with three church colleges. One a well known Church of Christ university, one Baptist, another Methodist. In the 50's the place doubled in size due to the air force base. That social group is mostly on the west side of town. Farm/ranch/church is more central and east side of town. Believe or not, you can live there without being assaulted by religion.

I attended public schools there. The big attraction for me was that Abilene and San Angelo are historically a part of the legend that became the movie, 'Friday Night Lights', playing in the same district as Midland/Lee and Odessa/Permian. Permian being the subject matter of the film.

Fort Worth is just a couple of hours east by interstate.

Default It's a nice place to live

For what it's worth, I was sent to Abilene a number of times from California a few years ago to conduct training on the B-1 at Dyess AFB and found it to be a nice place all around. The weather is beastly hot in the summer with tons of humidity that doesn't let up, even at night, but it's okay in winter. I was put up at the Ramada Inn on Winters highway and when I wasn't enjoying the air conditioning in my room and eating at the buffet next door, I went about immersing myself in the local culture through some friends I met through church and visdited a number of times over the years that followed. I'm not so sure the job market is the greatest, but for someone retiring, I think it'd be okay. I've lived in California all my adult life and I've been used to the sights and the lifestyle here, so I'd have to believe that anyone settling in west Texas would find themselves having to make adjustments.

I recently retired and moved home to TX and choose Abilene because of size, great weather, etc. Someone said nothing to do? Wonder where he lives because it's not here. ArtWalk once a week in the summer, once a month through the very short winter; concerts, bands, parades, festivals, art shows, Grace Museum with many, many events and goings-on through the year; Churches with festivals, dinners, theatre, throughout the year; programs and events at the Universities here open to the public; very active Library system with events throughout the year; three major parks (and many smaller parks) great for picnics, etc. and just walking (we walk at Red Bud Park every morning). Small towns around Abilene also have many, many on-going events, particularly in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Also there are the Forts, one of which has great Star Gazing! Also, DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) is a 21/2 hour drive east -- this gives you a lot of the advantages of a BIG metro-area without having to live there in all that noise and traffic. Every place is a tradeoff, every place has it negatives and positives--when I weighed one against the other, Abilene, TX won hands-down and, P.S. the food it great! Lots, and lots of terrific places to eat from the dozens of little cafes, mid-sized restaurants, some of the chains--all of which are better than their counter-parts in other cities, and large, "fancy" places. Most of all, there is the people who've I've found are pleasant, polite, helpful, and (for the most part) nice to be around. Come on down and see us some time. K. Reed, Abilene, TX
