first off, what gave you the impression I wasnt calm...Just because I said no offense or something? All I'm saying is that your opinion is completely biased and you just dont have as much experience with both kinds of cars, that's all. You mentioned expertise, but yet you dont have any when it comes to Subarus, except for hearing just a few. Also, this is not a pissing match....it's a simple discussion. It's not my fault you are trying to make it more than that.

Fine. I have enough experience with Subarus to be slightly dangerous and I know the workings of their powertrains well enough. That said, I am not a subaru tuner or any sort of expert. I am also not deaf, I can actually hear very well. So when it comes to listening to the exhaust notes of the dozens of subarus I have come across with performance systems I know pretty well what they sound like.
You could give me your most highly tuned subaru and a myriad of domestic v8's, blindfold me and I will pick out the boxer instantaneously. It is a very unique exhaust note that I could never confuse with anything else, especially a V8.
As for your last comment... Yeah, progress is a *****...
Are you implying that it's complexity is a result of the progressive automotive world? Do you think a 8.0L W16 engine is a shining example of what is to come? If Bugatti were truly progressive they would be moving away vehicles powered by petroleum.

To what? Electricity?
They are, together with BMW at the forefront of Diesel technology, as well as very frugal petrol engines, they're also spending heaps of money researching hydrogen/ hydrogen hybrids and electric cars as well as conventional electric hybrids, so I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about here.
And supercars have never been about green technology, it's been about performance, they do green and renewable energy with the rest of their range. Frankly fairly high up in their range considering their Diesel powered LeMans racers.
(I hope moderators let this thread stand unedited, this is an interesting debate, and the thread is old anyway, the OT shouldn't matter.)
No, they don't. The reason they don't sound like a V8 is because they are NOT a V8. I have heard dozens of these subie exhausts... it's very redundant and boring, they all sound and look the same. If I were to equate the sound they make to something it would have to be a big snow blower.
All boxer engines sound like 66 VW bugs to me. They make me cringe when I hear one with a fart can exhaust. yuk
Well I used to be that way. Dont get me wrong, I still love domestic V8's....1st and 3rd gen Camaros especially. But after owning 2 Subies, I really cant ever see going back, except for maybe a project car or something. Subies are overall just better vehicles.

I never said you were deaf, but I'm simply stating you have been around Subies with nothing more than a fart can, or ones with Equal Length headers. As far as telling the difference between the boxer and a v8, well I hope you could. Heck, 9 times out of 10, I could do the same thing with a Mustang and a Camaro. Two things dont have to sound exactly the same for them to sound similar.
