We're relocating to either St. Louis or Lexington (just trying to decide which way to go), but we'd really love a walkable neighborhood where we can get to restaurants/retail shops/etc. from our apartment/house.

Any particularly nice neighborhoods? Price isn't that important since we're coming from one of the pricier Chicago neighborhoods.

Sounds like you might like the Central West End...Urban groceries, movie theatre, Forest Park, yada yada yada...

Lafayette Square may also a consideration, being upscale urban.

Definitely the CWE is one of the most walkable neighborhoods around to live. If you want to go more upscale, the other choice is a condo/apartment in downtown Clayton which is also very walkable but with a very different tone than the CWE. The good restaurants there are typically much more expensive and everything is geared more towards an older, more affluent crowd.

Totally agree with both of the suggestions above and would also suggest looking into the South Grand area and the Washington Ave. Loft District.

I live in Chicago now so if you have specific comparison questions I'm happy to help however I can!

Urban or suburban? Where in Chicago do you live now, and do you like that neighborhood, and if not which ones there do you like?

St. Louis and Lexington are two very different options.

The CWE is a very walkable, contemporary and fun neighborhood. But....do NOT go near Euclid/Delmar, because the socioeconomic criteria takes a HUGE dive in that vicinity.

Kirkwood is boring, designed for older, more conservative couples. Everything closes early.

Webster Groves? What is there, a Straubs, a USBank and a couple of low-end bars and coffee shops. Maplewood is much better, you've got Schalfly and other cooler, more hip places that don't close at 10:00.

A lot of the places are very trendy and diverse: CWE, Delmar Loop, Washington Ave., South Grand and Tower Grove. Do you have a family? Are you wanting a home close to schools and parks, as well as shopping and restaurants? I would recommend the Southwest part of the city, too, which is where I live. There's St. Louis Hills (one of the safest neighborhoods with medium-to-high priced homes). There are great private schools there, as well as the nicely sized Francis Park. Plenty of shopping and restaurants off of the streets: Hampton, Chippewa, and Watson. South Hampton (called SoHa) is similar. Plenty of newer shopping/and retail between Macklind Ave. and Hampton Ave. Then there's the North Hampton neighborhood, which is close to all the same streets, too. The zip codes to check out are 63109 and 63139. All three of these South City neighborhoods are safe, friendly, and very walkable.

I think south city is more kid-friendly than some of the other places suggested, but if you don't have kids, you should look at the CWE, Clayton, Soulard, Lafayette Square. I lived in Old Town for 2 years, and the part of the city that strikes me as most similar to that neighborhood is downtown, particularly Washington Ave. Just be prepared that St. Louis is a much slower city than Chicago. Eveything shuts down pretty early, and you might have a hard time finding takeout at 3 am...one of the things I do miss about Chicago
