Listen to Mike 0421. :-} He is spot-on in his comparisons. My family lived in Springfield, VA when I was in college in DC.. and we spent a year in Silver Spring, MD when I was in high school, so I know the DC suburbs well enough and Mike has it right.

everyone on here familiar with St. Louis has. I have a friend from gradeschool who owns a home down there. Good area, safe, inner-ring suburb. It's very middle class, and will have a quick commute to the city. My friend did mention that it's supposedly the Affton has the oldest population per capita in St. Louis, which if true, is interesting. All in all, i think it's a good, middle class piece of old suburbia (circa 1930-1950).

This is a pretty solid run down of Affton.

What can I expect to pay for a nice rental? Lastly, how is the cost of living out there? Right now, I am living in DC. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Well, as a fellow mom who is very soon moving to St Louis, I can give you a little bit of what I and my fiance have discovered. First of all, I think you're going to be very happy with schools and education for your son, as the surrounding suburbs have very high ranking schools in may areas. We toured 6 suburbs in west county and 6 schools. Like you, our priority is good education and safety/walkability. Curbside charm and character of the homes does not hurt to throw in the mix either.

With those factors combined, after our touring and consideration, we chose Clayton. We found a great neighborhood combined with a great school, and reasonable rent. Commute into St. Louis should not be too bad either.

From what we saw you might also like Kirkwood, Webster Groves, and Brentwood. All very nice and great schools.

Good luck!
