Can you really get anything downtown for $700/month?

Yes that may be tough. Rent is usually around a dollar per sq foot. You could also look in the CWE (Debalivere) or I would also suggest the Loop as others have.

Whoa now CWE and Debaliviere are not the same. Debaliviere is much sketchier.

I would not call DeBaliviere sketchy. Though I do agree it's not the Central West End.

I have--my best friend used to live in the area as a single white female with no car. I probably would've moved there myself after grad school if I was still single because I think the area is a great value.

Yes.

Obviously people's definition of sketchy can vary based on your personal city experience, but I've seen nothing in that area that would leave me to believe the area is, in any way, sketchy.

Do you have any personal experiences you would like to share?

I think many people feel this same way. It's sad that, for some, a neighborhood is declared "sketchy" or "ghetto" simply because a few "undesireables" can be seen on the streets.

Heh. When we lived in West County, driving on Manchester Road in Ballwin on Saturday evenings coming home from the (dear departed) Borders, we'd often see (white) suburban teen boys dressed in their wannabe ghetto duds pulled over for presumably speeding and/or driving recklessly.... didn't mean West County was sketchy, just boys being boys.
