IMO, the amount of extra training the Phelps has probably had to endure (ie commitment) as well as his longevity in the sport (last Olympics numbers are nearly as impressive) and formidable competition in this Olympics = Michael Phelps!
For now, it's Phelps. He came in with really high expectations 4 years ago, didn't quite live up them and went back and worked really hard to meet his goals this time around. He has more of a proven record of greatness. Now...4 years from now, Bolt will blow Phelps out of water (pun intended ) if he comes back and repeats his feats from this Olympics.
Phelps is king of the pool and Bolt is king of the track. I'm happy that Phelps did his amazing performances in the first week and then this week is all Bolt's!
Both are no doubt the 2 big names of the Olympics and for me Phelps has done what Bolt has done but on a larger scale the way Bolt jogs to victory and the way Phelps just cruses it seems so effortless on both parts but Phelps and Bolt broke the WR by a big margin with the others left far behind and for Phelps to take part in around 17 races total was quite something. I bet the guy does feel more comfortable in water than on land it was just amazing to see Phelps coming out beating WR then onto the next without any hint of tiredness.
I'll give Phelps the slight edge based on a.) the number of heats (races) he had to compete in and b.) the fact that he had to compete in more than one type of stroke which means a wider variety of training needed to be done
I think they are both amazing athletes whose bodies were tailored made for their sport, only Bolt has redefined a sprinter's body. Honestly, you can't say one is better than the other ... don't think Bolt could swim 25% as well as Phelps and I may be going out on a limb here, but Phelps sure isn't built like a 100m man.
No kidding! I love Usain Bolt .... oh heaven forbid an athlete exudes joy! I recall Michael Phelps with his wingspan about 20 feet long waiting for the finish of some of his relay races ... come on! So I guess it's ok for Phelps to celebrate and Bolt must be mr. stoic????
Hateraide is right. Unless Jean Rogge is in da house.
