I do. It seems like every Olympics it is a financial catastrophe, terribly planned, and filled with controversy. And for what? For a bunch of athletes to compete in sports that the overall majority of people could care less about? Just seems pointless to me. Don't get me wrong, I respect the insane amount of work these athletes put into their sport but that's about it. I enjoy the World Cup/Euro Cup and pretty much all 5 major pro sports in America as well as college sports. But for whatever reason I just can't get into the Olympics. What do you all think?
Its a great bandwagon event and thats about it imho. People pretend to like all these sports because their country is in it. The last time I watched the Olympics all I heard was the US team whining people were on PED's if they didnt get the gold. Id much prefer it if it were amateur events, but even at that I wouldn't watch it a whole lot. I used to watch the boxing back in the 90's but I felt like many of the fights where not judged correctly / fixed.
Americans are very indifferent and prefer domestic commercial sports, but I can say in many countries Olympic games are a big deal.
My parents are not into sports but during Olympic games they watched a lot of matches. It is also the only time a lot of people watch diving, gymnastics, swimming etc. It is also a time many people in a country talk about the same thing and have the same wishes.
It's the one time all nations can (and should) leave politics behind for goodwill and friendly competition. It's also a place where a qualifying athlete, no matter how small their country, can take home gold and be best in the world at their skill. As an American, I find that refreshing when our sports are dominated by big markets and big money.

It was the politics in part which made it a show. The atheletes represent a nation so you have people with no reason to be there except they represent a nation that hasn't produced a world class competetor. With the end of the Cold War the show went away. While the Olympic Committee could still get content providers to pay for it as they had the goodwill and friendly prejudice also those networks and advertisers still saw the audiences dwindle away. Add in the other networks showing the minor sports year round instead of a reality show
Exactly. Here is an article that talks about some of the cost of the Olympics. I just can't see a whole lot of positives about hosting the Olympics except for the PR opportunity but even then I think its hard to justify. Like what's going to happen to all the venues and facilities made specifically for the Olympics? Just seems like such a waste to me. Money could have gone to much better projects to improve the city long term.
It's not a waste. Why does everyone have to complain on some of it? It makes no sense to me.
