But no one is employed there yet. Construction workers are there, I guess, but not enough to make a difference.

Local TV news in 1/23 about 2022:

(This year has been more of the same.)

“New numbers this month show employment in the Charleston and North Charleston metro area saw a 6.6% increase last year. That’s the second highest in the nation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

I don't recall Charleston being listed among the top in job growth in the country the year Boeing opened. Boeing is the 2nd largest manufacturing employer in the state.

If the recent job numbers are legit, somehow Charleston is adding more jobs now than when Boeing opened up. Looks like it will be difficult to determine exactly how they did it.

I mean that was over a decade ago so i imagine finding non-archived data from those years might be a bit more difficult. It is rather amusing in my opinion to realize that, in the last year the US has added somewhere in the range of 1.5-2mil jobs, so the Charleston area adding 20-25k jobs in that same period is roughly equivalent to 1-1.5% of all jobs added in the US in the last year.

Life sciences firms
Retail
Logistics
Professional services
Education

….. to name a few

The 1,500 jobs at Redwood Materials are expected to be created over the next 10 years. The beginnings of their operations were to happen by the end of 2023. I suppose they’re on track.

Actually I guess the first round of hires may have happened, because production is supposed to start by the end of 2023, but the 1,500 jobs are to come over the next 10 years.

Beyond that the Hollywood area has been starting to see some growth reach it, and then the extent of growth around Summerville is starting to get pretty close to the border with Colleton county. One thing Charleston does have going for it is that it's by far the largest Urban area in the state, about 680k vs columbias 590k vs Greenvilles 390k and then Spartanburgs 200k.
Perhaps but I recall seeing job announcements for Colleton County itself over the past year or two that are more substantial than I would've expected otherwise (like this and this). That might prevent them from reaching the 15% threshold for the time being but time will tell.

The true Greenville urban area population would have to include Mauldin-Simpsonville which is separated from Greenville's on paper due to a technicality.

The 2022 urban area populations are:

Charleston: 707K
Columbia: 604K
Greenville + Mauldin-Simpsonville: 570K
Myrtle Beach: 332K
Rock Hill: 229K
Spartanburg: 200K

I see. The announcement said operations would begin this year so I suppose things might have gotten a bit delayed, or it may open next month and technically be on schedule.
