I live in Renton and like it just fine. Burien is also a good choice. So is Des Moines, if you're close to the water. As other have said, the Browns Point area is nice, as is Dash Point. But for community/things to do, etc, without being too far from Seattle, Renton and Burien.

North Tacoma neighborhoods (Downtown, Stadium, 6th Ave, Proctor), for a surprising amount of amenities in shouting distance, easy commute to Federal Way, and cheaper rent than the central Sound.

Burien or Renton (Or possibly Des Moines near the Marina), for a reasonable (reverse) commute, fairly lively main street/downtown areas for suburbs, and easy access to Seattle.

Tacoma will be the more urban/cheaper option of the two, but the others would be solid options to be in-between work and Seattle. The only parts of Federal Way I'd really recommend are a bit sleepy/probably not as lively as what you're looking for. But it's also hard for me to suggest paying Seattle rents when you'll be working in FW.

I highly recommend Edgewood , Milton area - 5 min to Federal Way, but still Pierce county ( lower taxes) and much calmer atmosphere...But please do not tell this to anyone.... It is a secret
