Hello...my wife and I will be visiting your lovely city for a week over Labor Day and I want to take some sunrise/sunset photos of Ranier from the city. I realize I could drive out toward the national park to get a closer look but I'm looking for the best viewpoint within the city accessible very early in the morning. Thanks for any input...can't wait for some cool weather!

You actually get a very good view from the Bainbridge Island ferry which takes about 30min from the pier in Seattle. Bainbridge Island is worth a visit anyway, so you could take sunrise pictures on the way out and sunset ones on the way back.

Downside to this is that you need a fairly long lens to get a frame-filling view of the mountain from anywhere in Seattle and this shooting from a moving 'platform' such as a ship is not ideal. In any case your success will very much depend on the weather. On a misty day you'll have trouble seeing the mountain at all.

Seward Park offers some great views of Mt. Rainier.

If it's a clear day, you can also get it from the northern stairs at Pike's Place Market.

The train doesn't stop for a perfect photograph, but I love the Rainier view on the northbound Link Light Rail just out of Tukwila in the morning.

When the "mountain is out" of course.

Any observation deck like the Space Needle, the top of Queen Anne, Beacon Hill, or some of the office towers downtown.

Agree totally with Ira on Seward Park.
Also: Kerry Park for the iconic Space Needle + Rainier shot, as well as Madrona Park on Lake Washington (below at sunset on a sunny New Year's Day, taken with a long lens).
