Was watching Terra Nova (if you don't like it, I hate you ) , and they had an EMP go off overhead, lost all power.

That could happen here too.

What could be done to make our power grid more robust and less likely to fail?

And would it work against other threats, not just EMP's?

Shoot, an oversized solar flare could potentially knock out our entire electrical grid which has actually happened in the past (on smaller scales) in cities in the northern US and Canada.

I wish I had an answer for you but I'm no expert in this field.

How about a Faraday cage?

Heck, one time when I was in Dallas at the Hospital, we were at the top of the hotel and watched transformers blow up all over the place during a storm. It was like July 4th. No telling how much it costs to restore electricity.

The electric company could've saved a lot of dough if they had had protection.

That is usually more about moving power.

I am talking about keeping the power on, from an EMP, ice storms, hurricanes, terrorist, etc...

They should move all the power lines underground but the unions will never allow that. We just got hit by that big storm back east and 98% of the state lost power. The people who didnt lose power were those with power lines underground

The main problem is destroyed transformers and large ones can take years to build and/or repair.

It would take approximately 5,000 large surge suppressors(5,000 large transformers) to protect the North American power grid from destruction.

It would cost about $500,000,000.00 to protect the transformers...peanuts compared to the social and infrastructure destruction such an event would elucidate.

There was a bill to address the problem but Congress killed it.

I remember that. Could not believe they wouldnt pass it.

Maybe if we turn it into a military issue, it can be passed.

Apparently those in Congress couldn't figure out how to make money on the deal...
