Suncoast funeral home speaks out after electronic death registry outage (Video)

Gendron Funeral & Cremation Services told ABC7 that the electronic death registry has been down since last Thursday. Funeral Director, Amanda Gendron-Rose, said staff noticed the outage that Friday.

“We waited Friday for most cases to try and populate on Monday and still nothing. So, we reverted to paper death certificates starting at that point,” said Gendron-Rose.

Gendron-Rose said it’s been a struggle dealing with the website being down. She said most staff and funeral home directors are trained on the electronic system.

“Death certificate typically took three to five business days for it to be processed from beginning to end. Now, it’s about, we actually haven’t even seen one yet that’s been 100% completed and death certificates been received from the health department. So, I would say it’s taking at least six to 10 days,” said Gendron-Rose.

Gendron-Rose said no information has been released to them from the system or the department of health about what is going on.

“Obviously we know that it was a Ransome that’s been held against them and that’s why they can’t, they can’t re-set up the website,” said Gendron-Rose.

For Sarasota resident John Shypkowski, he is grieving the loss of his wife Sharon. Shypkowski explained they had been married for 50 years and she passed away on the day the system went down.

“Very unexpected. The last thing that you know, the big shock. It’s pretty traumatic,” said Shypkowski.

County repeals local business tax

https://www.newsbreak.com/news/35220...l-business-tax

The Sarasota County Board of Commissioners decided Tuesday to repeal the county’s Local Business Tax, a series of fees that grew out of the county’s previous business licensing system.

The county’s LBT ordinance is based on a fee rate structure prescribed by state law.

The annual fees are determined by business classification. For instance, it’s $3.15 per year for people who rent advertising space. If you run a cemetery, you have to pay $157.50 to the county each year.

The tax was set up in 1991 to license various businesses in the county. It was modified in 2007, when the state of Florida took up licensing many of the same businesses.

During the 2022-23 fiscal year, Sarasota County collected $699,815 in local business taxes. Much of that money, about $475,000, goes to fund the county’s Economic Development Council. That makes up about 40% of the EDC’s $1.8 million budget for the 2024-25 year.

At the public hearing Tuesday, community member Sherry Thornton told commissioners she opposed the repeal.

“Knowing that the businesses supported paying this business tax for this service, it doesn’t seem quite right that it would come back to the taxpayers to pick that up,” Thornton said. “As a taxpayer, I object to that.”

Thornton also said that repealing the tax could have unintended consequences ,such as getting rid of the county’s business roster.

“I know that list of businesses was used quite extensively by some local governments after Hurricane Ian and during COVID,” she said.

County Government Relations Director Rob Lewis said the action will not affect the interlocal agreement between the Economic Development Corporation, and the county and its cities

Commissioner Mark Smith voiced his opposition for the repeal, calling it “dumb.” He and Commissioner Ron Cutsinger have opposed repealing the tax. Commissioners Mike Moran, Joe Neunder and Neil Rainford supported its repeal.

“I have to agree with the speaker in that when you have a group of folks’ businesses that are lobbying us to continue to tax them to support the EDC — and then you decide not to do that, as we’re cutting the millage rate,” Smith said. “Now we’re going to use general funds, money to support the EDC, which is worthwhile.”

Neunder rebutted, saying small businesses cannot thrive under the county’s LBT.

“The small business owners that I know are hurting in today’s economy,” Neunder said. “I didn’t hear one person that was either familiar with EDC, with all respect to the people, or that was in favor of paying something additional that they could have used that money somewhere else they wanted to support.”

The repeal passed 3-2.

It was the first time Manatee County Deputy Robert Pereyra Jr. met Sam Loyd Jr. at Aspire at Palma Sola Bay.

"After he took the shot at me, he took off that way," said Loyd Jr.

Deputy Pereyra Jr responded to the nursing facility on May 24 just after 3:30 a.m.

"It looks he smashed his car into the door, took a shot at the guy and took off running," said Deputy Pereyra Jr.

At that time, Deputy Michael Davis went to search for Sean Calcutti. Calcutti had just crashed into the Bradenton nursing facility, pulled a gun on Loyd and another employee and then took off.

"We have more shots fired in the back of the property," said Deputy Pereyra Jr.

What would occur in the early morning hours of May 24th is something many will never forget.

The Sarasota Police Officers Association and the City of Sarasota head back to the negotiating table hoping to hammer out a new contract on Tuesday. The talks come as the police department claims the city is not negotiating in good faith.

In a statement the union claims the department lost dozens of employees due to wages.

During previous negotiations in 2023, 8 On Your Side compared salaries for SPD and the sheriff’s office.

- Sarasota Police Department: $61,000/year
- Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office: $64,537/year

Last year, in a statement, the city said, “Sarasota is very competitive regionally with law enforcement salaries.” Today, 8 On Your Side reached out to city leaders about current negotiations, but they were not immediately available for a response.

Tropical activity should quiet down over the next couple of weeks due to a large amount of dry Saharan dust crossing the Atlantic Ocean and a higher amount of wind shear. Don’t expect the quiet to last too long.
A couple of well known hurricane forecasting centers have recently updated their predictions for the season. Coloroda State University came out with their new revised forecast on July 9th.
