For everyone gripping their steering wheel in bumper-to-bumper traffic or cringing at the sensation of hot breath on the back of their neck while standing in a crowded line, there is finally a place to channel all that energy that stays pent-up in order to function in society.

iSmash, a “rage room” company offering what's known as smash therapy to patrons in Brandon, just outside Tampa, announced that it’s expanding to four additional locations in Sarasota, Lakeland, Wesley Chapel and St. Petersburg.

At iSmash, individuals or groups of customers are able to purchase packages ranging from 20 to 50 minutes and can smash everything from a glass dish to a used car with a small arsenal of instruments including baseball bats, sledgehammers and crowbars.

Smashers can customize their experience with personal music playlists and permission to bring objects from home. Each session takes place in a contained room with proper safety equipment.

To tackle urgent infrastructure projects, Longboat faces $27M debt

Due to rising project costs, two necessary utility projects come with a price tag of almost $40 million.

Longboat Key’s subaqueous force main replacement and Country Club Shores' asbestos cement pipe replacement projects can’t wait any longer.

At a June 28 meeting, Longboat Key town commissioners reviewed the projects and directed staff toward a financing method for the projects that require upfront costs with a high price tag. As a result, the town will incur a $27 million debt.

“You have to start from the perspective of we have to do this, this is not optional,” Town Manager Howard Tipton said to frame the discussion.

The primary driver of the financial need comes from the subaqueous force main project, currently estimated to cost $31.4 million for the remainder of the project, which is the replacement of the pipeline under Sarasota Bay. This is due to a 2020 fracture and leak from the existing pipe.

Sarasota police union pushes for higher wages, contract negotiations resume

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YlayabPGko

The Sarasota Police Officers Association and the City of Sarasota head back to the negotiating table hoping to hammer out a new contract on Tuesday. The talks come as the police department claims the city is not negotiating in good faith.

In a statement the union claims the department lost dozens of employees due to wages.

During previous negotiations in 2023, 8 On Your Side compared salaries for SPD and the sheriff’s office.

- Sarasota Police Department: $61,000/year
- Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office: $64,537/year

Last year, in a statement, the city said, “Sarasota is very competitive regionally with law enforcement salaries.” Today, 8 On Your Side reached out to city leaders about current negotiations, but they were not immediately available for a response.

For the second time in just over four years, Sarasota-based hydraulic cartridge valve manufacturer Helios Technologies has replaced a CEO for allegations of a potential violation of the company’s code of business conduct and ethics.

The latest news is in regard to Josef Matosevic, who had been named president and CEO of the company, one of the largest private employers in Sarasota, June 9, 2020. Matosevic, who had been an executive for other large industrial businesses in the area, including Welbilt in Pasco County, replaced Wolfgang Dangel, who had been let go, the company said in April 2020, for violations of company policy, including “poor judgment involving a consensual relation with an employee.”

Sarasota Yacht Club presents expansion plans to the city

Local architect Mark Sultana recalls when he received the phone call that he won the contract to design the current facilities for the Sarasota Yacht Club.

It came the day his daughter was born.

“My daughter is 16 now, so I’ve been working on this project for that long,” said Sultana, founder of DSDG Architects, to the City of Sarasota's Development Review Committee at a July 3 meeting. The yacht club is just east of St. Armands off the John Ringling Causeway.

“The club has become very popular. They have about a 75-person waitlist currently to get a membership, so they engaged me to look at future development and future expansion for the project,” Sultana said. “Some of the areas that need attention are the fitness center that's too small and the office space for employees is too small.”

To address those needs and to eliminate the waiting list, Sultana and the club settled on a new free-standing structure built above current surface parking, plus more parking spaces in order to expand membership. The private club is zoned Office Regional District and requires a minor conditional use and site plan approval by the Planning Board.

Proposed changes to the site plan originally submitted in 2008 include:

Local housing authorities implement HUD action to protect families from extreme heat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX_S7-lJQUc

There was a heat advisory in Tampa Monday. The Center for Disease Control finds the major heat risk will return this weekend.

Chances are, your air conditioning is probably still running, and it’s running up your power bill.

Residents of public housing could get some relief on their bills, thanks to guidance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

HUD is taking action to protect families against extreme heat. It impacts the more than 1.6 million people living in public housing. Especially those who are the most vulnerable.

In clarifying the steps Public Housing Agencies (PHA’s) can take to reduce the threat of extreme heat, HUD is pushing for families to be able to afford to cool their homes.
