Opinion - Memo to Sarasota County candidates: Don't hide from voters by skipping public forums

Opinion piece by Shawn Bartelt - the president of the League of Women Voters of Sarasota County.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/polit...d=BingNewsVerp

For more than 60 years, voters have relied on the League of Women Voters for nonpartisan candidate forums.

But this year, with the Sarasota County August primary just around the corner, several candidates have declined or ignored requests to participate in our three upcoming forums – or they have failed to submit answers for our vote411.org voter guide.

When candidates refuse to attend or participate, they lose the opportunity to express their views without risk of being misquoted or having their statements taken out of context. For voters, a candidate’s absence creates a vital information gap – and it also raises suspicions about the candidate’s reluctance to be heard.

VOTE411.org, the League’s public service website, is designed to provide all the information voters need to make informed choices when they cast their ballots. Vote411.org also gives candidates the opportunity to clarify where they stand on the issues that matter most to their community.

Our forums are free and open to the public, and they are conducted in an egalitarian manner. All candidates are asked the same questions, and all questions are vetted to assure a nonpartisan viewpoint.

The LWV of Sarasota County is hosting the following candidate forums prior to the Aug. 20 election:

- July 11: Hospital Board primary election.
- July 17: Sarasota County School Board final election.
- July 22: Sarasota County Commission primary elections for District 1 and District 3.

To serve the widest possible audience, voters can also see the forums through livestream – or by watching professionally recorded versions of these discussions on our website, lwvsrq.org.

We thank the many candidates who have agreed to participate. For those who have declined our invitation, please reconsider: When all candidates come forward and clearly express their views, they demonstrate their respect for the people they hope to serve – and everyone wins!

We invite the public to visit lwvsrq.org to learn how to view these forums, whether in person or virtually. Go to vote411.org to find out which candidates will be on your ballot.

Palmetto’s Marriott hotel features a rooftop restaurant. Take a look at the views inside

For full article & photos:

https://archive.is/pNVb9#selection-823.19-823.107

When the gleaming Palmetto Marriott Resort & Spa opens this month, guests will come for the amenities and service. That’s a given.

But managing partner Tony DeRusso says it’s the culinary offerings, all open to the public, that will give Manatee County’s largest hotel its identity.

Any discussion of dining offerings should start with the much-anticipated opening of the Oyster River Restaurant, an 88-seat eatery with a full bar on the eighth floor.

Oyster River’s rooftop panorama extends from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in the north to downtown Bradenton in the west and south and the Manatee River to the south and east.

The by-reservation-only restaurant has indoor seating as well as open-air seating on the terrace, looking south.

The theme is nautical. The 252-room hotel is designed as a “ship on land” and the restaurant has lots of glass to take in the views, subdued brown and black finishes, four-seat tables and seating along the bar.

With a name like Oyster River, you would expect shellfish to be among raw bar offerings. And it is — with oyster selections from the Florida Gulf, New York, Seattle, Massachusetts and Japan.

The raw bar also offers caviar, shrimp cocktails and sampler towers. The towers include Maine lobster, crab, shrimp cocktail, mussels and oysters.

Main courses include fresh catch, seabass, lobster and clam linguine, lobster thermidor, wagyu filet of beef and more.

Sarasota coffee shop doubles in size, adds yarn business

A family of German immigrants musters up a rare match, in opening a yarn store inside their Sarasota European-style cafe.

For full article & photos:

https://archive.is/OsuOG

A tight-knit family in Sarasota via Germany (and Virginia) might have the solution for how to make a European-style coffee and pastry shop stand out. The answer: sell yarn, too.

The unusual combination starts with Hashtag Café, on Bee Ridge Road at Tuttle Avenue in Sarasota. In its 18 months of operation, it’s attracted a mix of patronage that includes local businesspeople, coffee lovers, remote workers and families.

More recently the café’s owners expanded the space to double its original size in order to launch a new business, Hashtag Yarn Corner – thus creating what may be the first-ever hybrid coffee shop/yarn and knitting store in the Southeast.

Hashtag’s owners — the husband, wife and son team of Elias, Bianca, and Mohi Bendraouia, respectively — moved to the U.S. in 2015 from Germany, settling in Virginia. They relocated to Sarasota In 2019. Like many immigrants the family wanted to develop a brighter future, and more importantly, a business future for Mohi post-high school.

Top 10 Business Observer stories of the first half of 2024

While some news is of closings and layoffs, people and companies in the region are also busy buying land, expanding and taking risks.

For full article:

https://archive.is/YG6bN

An analysis of the most-viewed stories in the Business Observer the first half of 2024 reveals, in a small sample size, two conflicting themes.

One theme: in several so-called legacy industries — shipping documents via trucks and planes and shopping malls, to name two — businesses are shrinking in size and employees. On the other hand, entrepreneurial-minded business leaders are seizing opportunities to grab and grow market share, even in restaurants and grocery stores, two sectors especially crushed by inflation and high costs.

One other theme: people in the region are busy: Out of the top 20 most-viewed Business Observer stories from Jan. 1 to June 30, 17 of them involve entities opening, closing, buying, demolishing, persevering land or and/or choosing Florida for a market debut for a new brand. (Two others of the top 20 involve reporting of news somewhat reflective of challenges many have experienced in the economy. One headline read: Collier County ranked worst county in Florida to raise a family, from a FloridaRentals.com report. The other, Home sales report: Sarasota-Bradenton leads nation in slashing prices, came from a Redfin analysis.)

One final quirky discovery: The two most-viewed stories so far in 2024 were both published on the same day, Feb. 27, and both had the word mall in the headline.

The top 10 most-viewed stores in the first six months of the year are:

Bradenton extends Nine Devils celebration

Negro League club had memorable 19-year run at McKechnie Field

The Marauders will continue an important tradition that honors the history of Black baseball in their own backyard.

“Bradenton Nine Devils Tribute Night,” which honors the team that played at McKechnie Field from 1937 to 1956 in the independent Florida State Negro League, will be celebrated for the second consecutive year on July 12. The tradition began last season when Bradenton worked in partnership with Black community leaders, former players and their descendants to shine a light on the history of the club.

Last year’s event included an appearance by Morris Paskell -- one of two living former Nine Devils players -- and information tables on the concourse stocked with old newspaper clippings, photographs and artifacts from the team’s run during the segregated era of professional baseball.

Videos from exhibits at the Negro League Museum were shown on the big board at LECOM Park, formerly known as McKechnie Field, where the Pirates have held Spring Training since 1969, not long after the Nine Devils’ final season.

The Florida Suncoast Lost a Musician Way Too Soon

For full article:

https://www.suncoastpost.com/srq-sco...-way-too-soon/

The news came as a surprise to everyone who knew him when it was announced last night the musician Zack Yoder passed away. Only 31 years old he left us way too soon. Most of you know him from his band, the Zack Yoder Group, who played in many venues around the Florida Suncoast.

So much has been written about the loss of Zack and I felt that the best way to express everyone’s feelings is to share many of the comments about him from Facebook.

Sarasota Boat, Bike And Car Fun Run Raises $52,000 For Children’s Charity

For full article & photo:

https://www.speedonthewater.com/sara...s-charity/amp/

By summer boating-event standards, last weekend’s fun run in Sarasota, Fla., benefitting Suncoast Charities for Children was far from a marquee happening. But boat-counts are just one measure of such events and far from the most important one. With roughly 30 powerboats, 25 automobiles and 16 motorcycles in the mix, the event raised $52,000 for the charity.

Working with local offshore racing great Billy Glueck, Innovation Marine’s Josh Boothby and other organizing committee members and assorted volunteers, Suncoast Charities for Children executive director Lucy Nicandri pulled yet another successful happening out of her hat. The event included a Disco and Dice-themed party on Friday night before the fun run. More than 200 guests dressed in their 1970s disco-best showed up for the bash, which included casino-style games and a dance contest—the winner took home a disco ball—at the Sarasota Event Center.

Dedicated to the late Noel Speranza, a former Suncoast Charities for Children board-member, the fun run started at the Marina Jack facility and finished at Tarpon Bay Grill.
