Not much of a rise in Covid hospitalizations (thus far) at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Much of the rise in the state of Florida is coming from places such as Miami-Dade. I don't think Omicron has made a big push yet in Sarasota - but well know more when the weekly report from FDOH comes out.

The positivity ratio at SMH went up to 4.5% compared to 2.3% for the week ending Dec. 17th. Usually hospitalizations lag the positivity ratio by about a week or two. But expecting hospitalizations to be muted in comparison to the Delta wave.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital Covid Update for Dec. 22

COVID-19 Patient Update:
Includes hospitalized patients who are positive for COVID-19 and those cleared of infection but still hospitalized at SMH facilities.

Total COVID inpatients today: 27 (no change from yesterday)
COVID patients in ICU: 5 (no change yesterday)
% Unvaccinated Inpatients: 74% (updated weekly on Wednesdays)

COVID-19 Test Results:
SMH positivity rate: 4.5% (2.3% for week ending Dec. 17, 2021)

Cumulative COVID-19 Cases:
Total number of patients treated since outbreak began.
Patient admissions: 4,796 (4,792 yesterday)
Patient deaths: 534 (no change from yesterday)

"Yes, Omicron will be seen as milder. But it can kill.
Mostly unvaccinated.

Who is dying of #Omicron on SA?
Waasila Jassat, @nicd_sa:
1. 87% = unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated
2. 13% = fully vaccinated

Curious, are they using the same vaccines in SA as the USA?

Any info on the new Vax being made by US Army that supposedly will cover all variants? Interesting if true, our army is better at vaccines than big pharma?

Let us put things in perspective.

The 2017–2018 flu season was severe for all US populations and resulted in an estimated 959,000 hospitalizations and 61,099 deaths.

To date, there is one death attributed to Omicron in the USA. in the UK, there are 14 attributed deaths.

To date, Omicron has been shown to be as serious as a "mild flu."

Can things get worse? Sure.

Should you panic? No.

Flu shots work relatively well. Covid shots work relatively well.

*A word of caution about Covid deaths being reported in South Africa.

Excess deaths in South Africa are quite high - indicating that the official Covid death counts from the government are likely biased lower by political motivation. However even taking this into account Omicron deaths as a % are much lower compared to Delta.

South Africa

As of 13 November 2021, excess deaths since 3 May 2020 was 271,311with 85–95% attributable to COVID-19, and the remaining 5–15% probably mainly due to overwhelming of the health services. This was more than 3 times the official COVID-19 death toll of 89,476.

"Bit more sobering, re: South Africa

(highly variable series, but seems to have been useful for prior peaks).

If this is true, then REAL deaths from Omicron might be >50% of Delta. (~ 25% now, with >14 days until peak).

"South Africa with doubling of deaths over past few weeks as Omicron cases have worked through.

Deaths now ~52/day (7 day average), still *only* 12% prior peak. Not expecting this to exceed 20% of prior Delta peak.

Positive rate & cases (down ~20%) c/w resolving outbreak."

See chart here:

https://twitter.com/scottdavidherr/s...18168707383303

"12/22/2021: Florida via CDC reported 20,194 additional COVID-19 cases

Cases increased by 304% per week (time to double 3.5 days) and at this rate the 12/19-12/25 average will exceed the Delta wave peak.

Hospital admissions are up 42% from last week and are tracking cases"

"According to health officials, South Africa has administered 24,082,686 vaccine doses across the country as of 15 November 2021. South Africa has accepted delivery of 3 different vaccines, Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca, administering both Janssen and Pfizer-BioNTech, with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine suspended, after a small study cast doubt on its effectiveness against the Beta variant.

36% of the South African adult population that is fully vaccinated."

Yes the new pan coronavirus vaccine looks very promising. However there are still many trials that need to be completed before it comes to market. Probably several months away yet. Here is a good thread about it:

Some reduction in hospitalisation for Omicron v Delta in England: early analysis

Some reduction in hospitalisation for Omicron v Delta in England: early analysis | Imperial News | Imperial College London

Estimates suggest Omicron cases are 15% less likely to attend hospital, and 40% less likely to be hospitalised for a night or more, compared to Delta.

The researchers stress that these estimated reductions in severity must be balanced against the larger risk of infection with Omicron, due to the reduction in protection provided by both vaccination and natural infection. For example, at a population level, large numbers of infections could still lead to large numbers of hospitalisations. They say the estimates provided in this paper will assist in refining mathematical models of potential healthcare demand associated with the unfolding European Omicron wave.
