We agree

Thomas Sowell is brilliant, his writings should be required starting in early high or middle school.

COVID hospitalizations at Sarasota Memorial Hospital remain high, but fairly steady lately

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...dy/7811175001/

The number of COVID-19 inpatients at Sarasota Memorial Hospital has remained high but fairly steady over the last two weeks, according to the hospital system’s spokeswoman.

This plateau comes after hospitalizations climbed significantly throughout June, said Kim Savage, the public information officer for Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The hospital system, which treats COVID patients at both its Sarasota and Venice facilities, reported having 88 COVID-19 inpatients on Tuesday, compared to 89 a week ago and 79 two weeks ago.

As I anticipated recently in Florida there is a disconnect between hospital admissions (rising trend) to official case counts (declining). There is a lot of uncounted home testing going on - and I don't believe FL counts a reinfection as a "case".

One Week Change
- Cases (7d avg) -10% to 9,679
- Adult Admissions (7d avg) +8% to 661
- Adult Inpatients -3% to 3,356
- Adult ICU Patients +7% to 392

This can be clearly seen in the color-coded graph here:

We're not sure, but it seems to us that lots of people are tuning out now about covid19, we guess maybe monkeypox might be on deck? Most that we know are a bit tired of it all.

Perhaps it's due to the lag time between catching Covid and being hospitalized. We'll find out if hospitalizations trend downward in 1-2 weeks.

It's a possibility that hospitalizations could start declining soon - and notably the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Covid inpatient census declined from 89 to 71 over the past 2 days - however IMO we are not yet near a major change in trend.

Namely test positivity is continuing to rise (for this current wave) - both at SMH and throughout the state of Florida. Today at SMH test positivity rose to a new high for the current wave (17.4%).

https://www.smh.com/Home/News-Events...ly-news-update

And Walgreens test positivity for Florida today is at 35% (also a new high for the current wave). Usually test positivity leads hospitalizations by several weeks.

https://www.walgreens.com/businessso...d-19-index.jsp

I will say it appears as though SMH is doing a good job of getting most Covid patients released relatively soon. ICU & deaths are lagging indicators but thus far it appears that most of the Covid hospitalizations are not causing severe illness.

Another leading indicator is wastewater. There is no wastewater data available for Sarasota County - but several Counties in FL have wastewater data. Currently it's a mixed bag - but the County closest to Sarasota County - Hillsbourough County is currently showing an increase in their most recent wastewater samples. Orange County is also showing an increase while a few of the others such as Miami have the look like they could turn up again soon after recent small declines. Wastewater tends to lead cases by about 2 weeks.

See wastewater data here:

Lastly BA.5 continues to evolve and currently there are 2 new subvariants recently growing faster than vanilla BA.5 & BA.5.1 in the USA. These new subvariants are BA.5.5 and BA.5.2.1

See recent USA subvariant chart here:

An interesting thread out today from Florida epidemiolgist Jason Salemi highlighting the recent divergence between official FL case counts & hospitalizations. Lots of charts & graphs:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott Herr (who specializes in Florida Covid data) has a unique visual meter showing hospital admissions in FL. See it here:

https://twitter.com/scottdavidherr/s...19780604186624

"COVID-19 at a glance for the eight largest states as of 7/6/2022

"New adult admissions per 100,000 population (7-day total)
- Florida 21.0
- Texas 11.3
- California 10.9
- Illinois 10.9
- Georgia 10.6
- New York 10.5
- Ohio 8.6
- Pennsylvania 8.3"

Why are you here if you don't care about it? According to the number of views this thread gets plenty of people still care about it. I suggest you just ignore this thread if the thought of discussing Covid bothers you - and stop being an azz. If you disapprove of this thread take it up with a moderator. Last I checked you're not a moderator - just a troll as far as I can tell.

I read this thread on occasion just to see what people who still talk about Covid are saying and to try to understand their continued obsession, not because I care about Covid anymore. I find this an amusing, and occasionally entertaining, social phenomenon. If there were a thread on Andy Kaufman sightings, I’d read that occasionally too.
