For 20 years I commuted Hwy 17, Hwy 9, and Bear Creek, (10 years from Felton, 10 from Boulder Creek) and in order of preference I liked Hwy 9 because of the beauty, Hwy 17 because it was faster, and =loathed= Bear Creek. The commuters on Bear Creek are the insane ones, and I'd pull over every few minutes because of the tail-gaters - and I'm not a pokey driver! That's the road I had to be most vigilant on.
Hwy 17 never made me nervous, maybe because in all the years I drove it I was never even in a near-accident. I do drive on the aggressive side, but not insanely. Never had trouble with the banking of the road, but then I didn't push my speed past all reason. Perhaps growing up in the NC mountains prepared me for the Hwy 17 roadway, and driving in Italy prepped me for the easy-going Hwy 17 commuters
