My sister's coworker's brother was killed this summer on highway 17.

They now have a petition about trucking safety that makes a ton of sense:

Vigil Attracts Media Attention | Daniel's Law

On July 10, 2014, the McGuire family needlessly lost their son Daniel in a horrific accident which occurred on California State Highway 17. This tragedy occurred because numerous companies failed to take steps to ensure that an unskilled trucker driving a faulty big rig not be allowed to traverse over a treacherous mountainous highway.

Daniel and other motorists traveling on Highway 17 that fateful day had no clue that a tractor/ double trailer configuration with faulty braking mechanisms carrying nearly 50 thousand pounds of top soil was being driven by a newly licensed and unskilled truck driver.

Stand with us and tell our elected officials to make our roads safer by:

1) mandating sufficient behind-the-wheel driver training, and increasing minimum licensing requirements

2) create a tiered licensing system based on driver experience, type of rig, and difficulty of the road.

3) raising minimum insurance liability coverage for commercial drivers.

This country needs at least 30,000 more truck drivers at the moment and the industry estimates it must hire 100,000 drivers every year for the next 10 years if it hopes to keep up with retirements, turnover and industry growth.

With the large number of new truck drivers placing motorists at risk, it will be up to individual states to implement safe on-the-road commercial driver training requirements as there are no Federal standards. The government only requires that you take and pass your CDL knowledge (written) and skills (driving) tests, allowing anyone to get a license in less than two weeks.

The mandatory minimum liability insurance has not changed since 1985. Truck drivers are required to carry a minimum $750,000 policy but studies show that nearly half of all truck related crashes result in injury claims that do not cover all medical costs incurred by the injured.

In Daniel’s memory, please sign this petition to make California’s perilous roads such as Highway 17 safer by ensuring that only well trained, adequately insured, and highly experienced truck drivers are allowed to navigate them.
