Guys, I'm getting ready to fly into town and will be there until Tuesday for a job interview.

Any specific places that a first time Frisco'er should check out (cool cheap little restaurants, clothing stores, parks etc.)?

Thanks guys~

First tip - don't call it Frisco!! Locals really hate that, and it will immediately have you pegged as a tourist... call it San Francisco, SF, or "the city," and you'll sound like a real San Franciscan. I'll post a bit later with some tips on what to see and do, but is there anything specific you like (aside from cheap restaurants, parks & clothing stores)?

Here are some suggestions on what to do...

Cheap restaurants:
- Mel's Diner, various locations... a good old fashioned '50s diner, which I believe has been around since then.
- Slice of New York, upper Haight & Castro... good, cheap, greasy New York-style pizza, slices made to-order.
- Chinatown or Clement street for the good Asian food, from very cheap to very expensive... if you feel like splurging, try Empress of China on Grant St.
- Cha Cha Cha, upper Haight and lower Mission... Cuban "tapas" (small bites), a full bar, and good sangria - not CHEAP, but not expensive either. Just be prepared for a long wait if you go on a weekend, since they don't take reservations.
- Naan N' Curry, various locations... cheap Indian food, which I haven't tried yet, but hear is "good for the price." The location on O'Farrell is supposedly open 24-hours, but I can't seem to find it!
- Bagdad Cafe, Castro/Upper Market... open 24-hours on weekends, and until 3 or 4am other days. It's not that cheap, but I got an awesome turkey burger & fries for like $6-7.

Clothing stores:
If vintage is your thing, try Crossroads, Buffalo Exchange or Wasteland - they're all on upper Haight, and a few other locations around SF. Upper and lower Haight both have lots of funky clothing stores, and you should also go shopping in the Fillmore district. For the upscale shops hit Union Square, which has a GIANT Macy's, Saks 5th Avenue (or is it Neiman-Marcus?), and lots of other nice stores.

Parks:
Biggest one is Golden Gate Park, which stretches nearly across the city from west-east... has tons of hiking trails, museums, Japanese tea garden, events, etc. Just be careful if you wander in at night, since it's a popular hang-out for homeless people & addicts. Some nice smaller parks include Mission-Dolores, McLaren (my dog's favorite), Buena Vista, Palace of Fine Arts (don't know if it's officially a park, but you should visit), Fort Funston, and tons more! Alamo Square park is another cool one, which is where the opening scene for "Full House" was taped - you can see the famous "Five ladies" there, also known as Postcard Row:

Okay, hope that gave you some ideas. There are obviously lots of other things I could suggest, but I've already written a novel - LOL. If you tell us some more things you enjoy, I'd be happy to offer more help... hope you enjoy our fine city, and good luck at the interview!!

This is very important:
do not,
do not,
do not,
ever call the City "Frisco".

People who call San Francisco "Frisco" or San Bernadino "San Berdu" have obviously watched too many classic movies of the 1930s and 40s, especially movies about hobos riding freight trains.

Or they see Hells Angels riding by with Frisco or Berdoo on their vests and assume that regular people must use those terms.

Regular people do often say "Frisco." Transplants come along, masquerade as veterans of the city and spew all this "don't say Frisco" business. You can tell how new someone is to the place by how enraged they are by the word. Correcting someone is like a rite of passage, or so they think. I've also noticed that the anti-Frisco people are generally white and middle-to-upper class. Listen to any Bay Area rapper and it's always "Frisco" in place of "San Francisco."

I'm a "veteran" of San Francisco, as I've been here since age 6... and I correct people on the Frisco thing all the time. You can say it if you want, but there are PLENTY of long-time residents who shudder at that word. But yes, the rappers & thug-types do use it as slang, but just in recent years. Oh, and yes I'm white (but not really sure what "class" I am), but my multiracial roommate also hates when people say Frisco - so your assumptions are incorrect in my observations.

LOL I can't believe I'm reading this. In my experience, the only people who shorten it to Frisco, are either young who are transplants, or people who live in the suburbs and come there to party.

As far as the rappers go......what can you think of that rhymes with San Francisco? lol
