I'm from Washington, DC and I'm making my first trip out to San Francisco at the end of July. I work in the web/IT field for a media company and I'm looking at SFO possibly becoming my second home.

I really enjoy upscale venues (lounges, hotels and restaurants) that you'd find in DC, LA and New York. I know San Francisco has its own personality and I'm looking forward to exploring that but can anyone tell me what (if any) upscale lounges, hotels and restaurants to visit while in SF?

I'll be in the Union Square area during my visit...so recommendations near there would be great even though I'll be exploring most of the city.

Thanks

For starters, try the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar at the Fairmont Hotel (Nob Hill).

In general, I think the scene in San Francisco is a bit more casual but there are places like that. It's nothing like NYC though. Also, for obvious reasons, those spots are more likely to be populated by the business travel types. They're not bad but they're not locals.

In this class, the Burritt Room is my personal favorite because they've got jazz, great drinks and a restaurant that serves some great food a few steps away in the Burritt Tavern.

Thanks ccm123 and rkwalton...those suggestions are exactly what I'm looking for! I like to get information from the locals on hot spots and places to go. I normally don't like the online travel guides...there's nothing like first hand recommendations from a local.

Keep the places coming!

Great suggestion. Actually the bar with the Maxfield Parrish pictures is pretty neat too. Elsewhere you might look into the Top of the Mark, it you don't mind heights.

There are lot of expensive places here though not necessarily upscale!

There are a lot of upscale restaurants and lounges here, some of them:

Lounges:

The Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel
The View in the Marriott Marquis Hotel

Restaurants:

Benu
Gary Danko
