Around Union Square: Local Edition. Not a hipster crown, more preppy. Rickhouse: more "trendy"/"hipster."

Also 83 Proof. Kinda mixed crowd between preppy/hipster.

I really like Comstock by North Beach/Chinatown. Excellent cocktails and desserts. Also the bar looks like a WEstern Bar. Complete with that auto piano. Bartenders are also dressed for the saloon and half have handlebar mustaches.

I was going to recommend Local Edition and Rickhouse, but I think of them as trendy, not upscale. Either way, they have no cover, so definitely check them out too. They both have awesome drinks!

Hmmm for me part if the enjoyment is the unique cocktails. I guess that pushes them above the "dives" even though they are trendy. But my definition of upscale bar might jut be $11+ drinks in a nice or interesting atmosphere.

Did we mention Bubble Lounge? Try that too.

If you like Latin music, try the Cigar Bar. Good cocktails as well.

I might say that most bars in SF are fairly upscale these days.
