mod cut Overall life is nothing like what the media reports and crime rate suggests----for a good chunk of us, well more than half I reckon would say its actually rather pleasant.

The SF Chronicle is making a big deal out of it anyways, unsurprisingly (and of course they never mention 90% of violence that happens in nice areas of SF, like the Fisherman's wharf shooting last week, and if violence happens at/near an SF event, they are quick to claim it had nothing to do with the event. But if it happens in Oakland they make a giant deal about it and Oakland being "crime-ridden"). And of course they have Chip Johnson doing it, because he's their idiot hack Oakland "reporter" who they call out from the sidelines to talk a bunch of BS about how bad Oakland is whenever they have the opportunity to do so.

A lot of the Uptown area is a dump, especially as you go north on Telegraph, and it doesn't really get nicer again until around 40th. Art Murmur is cool but I went there a few months ago and for a hipster art scene there sure were a lot of thug types wandering around. That said, there's a lot of private security guards there, and the shooting happened after the event was over.

Compared with what's south of 40th, north of 40th is nicer. It's still pretty grubby and mostly crappy fast food places and liquor stores. 45th is around where the Temescal/Telegraph strip starts.

There are the Korean stores & restaurants between 24th & 40th, but yeah, otherwise it's still kinda grimy and stuck in the past.

Macarthur & 40th is also where the long overdue transit village for the Macarthur BART station will be located.

The Friday Festival Director says there will be more security next month to make sure crowds disperse more quickly. So it seems they are taking the shooting very seriously.
