My best friend has AT&T. We speak almost every day and rarely have dropped calls. He drives from Oakland to the Peninsula through SF, and even on the bridge, it's usually ok.

We have AT&T. There are some spots where calls are dropped, but it's not terrible. There were a few spots in the Richmond (where we lived) where I would consistently run into problems, but they keep adding towers so it's possible that even some of those spots are fixed. In any case, it wasn't bad enough to make us switch carriers. I haven't had trouble in the East Bay yet (mostly Alameda, Oakland, Berkeley).

How is the coverage in Napa? I am considering relocating to the Napa area.

I definately recommend Verizon over ATT for the bay area.

It's funny, I have better reception on AT&T (iPhone 4) when I visit San Francisco, than when I'm home in the NY area. I live in a town on Long Island, in my town, great reception, in the next town over, no reception. In Jersey City where I work, especially in my office, It's like being in a bunker. Terrible reception. AT&T also lies, I can have 3 bars, and I have absolutely no or incredibly slow data.

When I visit the Bay Area, the reception is excellent, except the last time I stayed in a hotel where I barely had reception. Yet walking around the city, perfect reception. Hell, when I took the BART to Walnut Creek from SF, even in the tunnels I had better reception than in my hotel. Overall, my AT&T experience seems better in SF than the NY area. Another reason to move back :-)

We've had the same experience. Absolutely terrible AT&T coverage in NY, especially in Manhattan. If OP is expecting to do much travel to the NYC area then it would be worth it to find a different provider.
