I have some friends arriving in the Bay Area from Italy and they need cell service with data during their 3 week stay. Anyone have any ideas as to what is the best plan for them, as I will have the responsibility of steering them in right direction. Thanks.

Yup, Virgin Mobile. Maybe $70-80 for the phone and then $35/mo with no contract. Just cancel when they return to Europe and then sell or donate the phone. Or keep it for their next visit. Target has a great selection.

TracFone, you can get a phone for as cheap as 15 bucks, and 120 minutes is like 20 bucks...

Bring their own phones, get a T-Mobile or AT+T (depending on which frequencies their handset uses) 30-day sim.

As noted Virgin or Trac-phone.

Also note that whereas in Europe things are set up for outright device ownership with cheap, cheap plans with lots of free texts, here ... not so much. Our "leasing" culture prevents such a market from being well established.

Whenever I go to Europe I am reminded how bass ackward the US mobile phone systems are and what thieves the carriers are.

They could, but the phone and charges would be higher... just bring the European phone over and jump on wifi. Although, I have had international phones, so whoever suggested just swapping out sim cards had the best idea, if it will work.
