Cabo San Lucas. I know there are direct flights from SD to there, and that is the perfect spot for relaxation. There are occasionally direct flights to Mazatlan on Aeromexico, but I think they might be seasonal.

greasy spoon but I have a soft spot for it. Near the zoo....the beach near the zoo has good snorkeling (by the jetty)

This place I saw on Anthony Bourdain, No reservations and checked it out. All the Hawaiian chefs eat here. a total dive also, but good stuff:
Side Street Inn »

this place is really authentic more indigenous foods such as poi....in fact the tastes are a little odd (the above mentioned places represent all the ethnic influences that came later)

I found a few decent flights. These places are on the agenda at some point but since I want to snorkel this trip, I would need Caribbean coast or Hawaii. Thanks for the Aeromexico info. I was not familiar with them.

as a follow up,decided to move the vacation up to February and go on a cruise out of SD. Just walk down the hill and on the ship! Even less stressful than a direct flight. It is my understanding that some of the cruise ships are pulling out of SD-probably due to Mexico making people jittery so we wanted to take advantage while there is still some competition in pricing.

That's great Clevelandgal. What places is the cruise going? I've never gone on a cruise in all my years traveling. We love to travel and constantly traveling but I've never been on a cruise but heard so many rave reviews from lots of our friends with kids. Sounds like there is quite a bit to do now on them vs. when I was younger.

We might try one in 2013. We already have all our travel plans set up for 2012 (spending the summer in Europe). But would love to try a cruise..... Let us know how it goes...

well we live to travel, although we slowed down a bit since moving here under the rationale we live in a vacation place and I was looking for work, and now that I have a job, I have little vacation time. A part of me is surprised I like cruises b/c the clientele can be really, really mainstream and the stuff on board (activities, types of food) appeal to a large range of people. For us the appeal is total relaxation being surrounded by the sea with few decisions to make. We have been overwhelmed with work before and it is nice to not have to think too much sometimes-on ship is cashless, and you know where you are eating that night. lol. we don't get into the shows, casino and activities, but love relaxing on deck and seeing a lot of great places in short time w/o pack and unpacking.

I have loved going to Europe independently and researching everything from hotels, train schedules, museums, food markets and so on...but it is as exhausting as it is exciting...and then packing and unpacking as you move around....

We have also cruised in Europe and I have to say it is nice if you don't have a lot a time to transfer of trains and in and out of hotels. You just walk of the ship and explore amazing cities if only for a day (and plan which ones you want to come back too). I also like it in the Caribbean. I love snorkeling in different places, and trying the different food and experiencing the different cultures and languages on various islands. For what it is worth we don't take the ship excursions, but go off on on our own so we have had some great adventures. We may take a ship excursion on this next one in Mexico though...not sure how far off the beaten path I want to go without a lot of research...which I don't have time for now.

I don't like cruising better than more independent travel, but for relaxation in a short time period, it is hard to beat. I imagine with kids it is nice too. Most cruise lines go out of their way to cater to children and make sure they have a good time. Most kids love cruises. We once took my husbands kids on a cruise thinking they would enjoy hanging out with other kids as well as us, and they ended up spending most of the time with us! you never know.

As far as SD- Holland America, Celebrity (both good lines and pricier than Carnival) and Carnival are here. Carnival is pulling out though this fall. The though of going on vacation and not getting on a plane is thrilling me.

My favorite search engine is at vacationstogo.com. I use them sometimes, and they are good, but the best thing is being able to do a fast and easy search (you can put SD as departure port and see whats out there)

oh the cruise is Mexico-Cabo san Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Ensanada, and some days at sea.

oh the cruise is Mexico-Cabo san Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Ensanada, and some days at sea.

Thanks for that website.. I'll check them out. Yeah, we also really live to travel. It's one of our absolute favorite things! We took a working sabbatical earlier this year (I can work over the internet and phone) for 4.5 months straight. It was fun but also exhausting traveling with 2 young kids that long.

We keep saying we will slow down now that we have moved to San Diego. And also our daughter started pre-school this year but we'll probably travel during her summer vacations.

Yeah, the cruise ships sound pretty 'idiot proof'. And the idea of not having to catch flights, trains, connections, worry about weight limits on airline flights, renting cars, etc. sounds ideal with kids.

Definitely the more I think about it now that you mentioned it...we'll definitely check it out. It's not fun anymore flying and being in airports is a major pain.

This last trip we started it and had a big Phil and Ted's Vibe stroller. Well, half way during the trip, American Airlines changed their policy on strollers that are larger so we couldn't gate check it anymore. We had to check it in. Major pain.

I'm going to check out that website you mentioned. I love planning independent trips myself. That's half the fun for me. I just planned out a 2.5 month continuous trip for summer 2012. We're heading to Paris, French Riviera, Rome, Milan, Lugano, Zurich and then ending the trip in London for the Olympics. Should be a great trip!

^holy crap, that's something else! And while Tokyo is a little further down on my visit wish list than some other places, I will simply enjoy seeing another big jet come in for a landing...not as big as the BAW plane though....
