We are semi-retired and looking at homes in these areas, have found one we like in Vista - Shadow Ridge area but upon reading blogs and information not a very nice picture of Vista is being presented, we like Carlsbad but homes are squished together and like Bonsall and Fallbrook with the space and views although it is a little pricier than we would like and it feels so far out, but we do like having at least a half acre or more with views... any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks!

I'm not sure where you're hearing bad things about Shadowridge, but it' a great place for someone semi-retired! I would expect some hesitance if you had a high school child, because the high school isn't that great but that doesn't seem like a concern of yours. I live here and there's a lot of retired people in the area.

Shadowridge in Vista is south of highway 78. Vista has areas north of highway 78 that are a lot grittier. Shadowridge is a nice area.

Check Encinitas. It's like Carlsbad but more open.

If you're looking for more land around your house, just drive around the Foothill Drive area of Vista. Lots more breathing room there than in Shadowridge.

Try Gird Valley on the eastern side of Fallbrook, in the Bonsall school district. It's a valley with the golf club in the middle, great views of the hills, lush, open feeling.
