WHY?!?!

"A few years ago, if you’d told me Dean Spanos could pull off a move to Los Angeles without being pressured by his peers to sell the team, I’d have accused you of having eaten some bad fish tacos. But it’s true: Of the teams theoretically in play for L.A. (Vikings, Jaguars, Raiders if Al Davis were no longer in the picture), the Chargers have moved to the top of an increasingly short list, partly because Spanos has come into his own as an owner – and also because his sincere efforts to make a stadium work in the San Diego area have been met with civic indifference. “Without a stadium he realizes they can’t compete [financially], and he has legitimately tried to get one built,” the aforementioned AFC owner says of Spanos. “His dream is to go to L.A., and it may happen.”"

You can never say never, but I think it's highly doubtful. When push comes to shove, the NFL is big business, big $$$, and a prestigious thing for cities to have. Particuarly a warm-weather city like SD, which could host a Super Bowl once a decade (or more often if the NFL let them). That's billions of dollars in hotels, restaurants, tourism, etc. When there's that much money to be lost, things like new stadiums have a way of happening. I think the economy tanking when it did actually helped save the Chargers from leaving.

Yes, The Chargers don't make it to the Super Bowl but they are still pretty damn good! Winning the Division every year for the last several years, beating the Raiders like 14 times in a row. The Chargers are like a tradition here. I hate when people say there aren't fans in San Diego. There are many many fans! It would be like if they tore down the Coronado Bridge or Balboa Park. It's part of what makes the city. It's nice to see the city represented nationally all over tv.When the games come on, there's a rush, you root for your team and for your hometown! It's a way to get away from the daily stress of life.

They can't sell out even when they are winning, same as the Padres. They won't build their own stadium and the tax payers would shoot down any vote for a new one that uses tax payer money, so? If he won't build his own stadium he has every right to leave. NFL franchises jump ship all the time now. Think CLeveland, even if the bolts bolt we can still get another team and name them the bolts again.

We lost the rockets and the clippers, I can see the chargers leaving too. Maybe convert the Q into an AMX / monster truck track. seems the be the only thing that sells out over there.

Um, I think they had a stat in the paper saying the Chargers have sold out and not had a local black out for 48 straight home games. At 8 home games per year, that's ... well, a lot of years (my math's not so good). I think it said since 2004, so 6 years.
So saying they "can't sell out" is not accurate. Also, I wouldn't count on attracting a new team if they leave, unless we build a new stadium. Just cuz it worked in Cleveland and Baltimore doesn't mean it'd work here.

It won't hurt so bad if they move to a new stadium south of L.A. I have read of places for a new stadium for an L.A. team that would not be such a bad drive, or a nice train ride, for all San Diego fans.

Don't think they would, but would be nice if they renamed them the So Cal Chargers if they moved and played outside of the L.A. city area.

Lots of different scenarios to expect or hope for.
